Hillary Rodham Clinton has an impressive resume. She’s an Ivy Leaguer, used to be a First Lady and Secretary of State and now she is the first woman in U.S history to become the presidential nominee of a major political party. She’s come a long way since winning the nomination, reaching 2800 delegates, sweeping more states than Bernie Sanders and getting endorsements from people like Oprah Winfrey. Seems like the whole country is now by her side and rooting for her along the way, and why not? It is pretty cool to have a woman running for president and winning the nomination. It shows how far we have come as American citizens. Sure there are setbacks such as gun control issues and police brutality, but it seems like Hillary’s nomination makes folks forget all about those issues and gives them hope.
What if I told you that I am still not a fan of the Hillary and that there are people that don’t like her, either? Don’t worry, it’s not because she’s a woman. It is because of the issues that came with her campaign that people didn’t like. Not everyone has a spotless record and we’ve seen this before with other presidents and politicians. Just look at Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky or Nixon’s Watergate scandal. It is clear the Hillary is different, but she is not without her faults.
In 1996, Clinton delivered a speech about the principles of her husband’s campaign. During that speech, she used the word “super-predator.” Here’s what she stated:
“We need to take these people on. They are often connected to big drug cartels. They are not just a gang of kids anymore. They are often the kinds of kids that are called super predators: no conscience, no empathy. We can talk about why they ended up that way, but first, we have to bring them to heel.”
It’s not that hard to figure out what minority group Clinton was talking about back then, considering she supported the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. This bill contributed to the explosion of racially titled mass incarceration in the country and many people blamed the law for making America the largest prison population in the world by far.
Another issue that many people have with Hillary is her longstanding opposition against gay marriage, which quickly changed when same-sex couples were granted the right to marry under the 14th Amendment. Clinton did everything in her power to go against gay marriage, standing by her husband as he signed the Defense of Marriage act and voicing her opinion on the issue when she was a senator in 2004. On June 26th, 2015, same-sex marriage became legal and Hillary acted like she was with the LGBT community all along. She even started going on Twitter posting on how “love wins” and posting pro-LGBT posts. It worries many people because, throughout all this time, Hillary has made questionable choices and seems like she's pandering just to get on top, which makes a lot of voters, like me, unsure if she’s the right person for the job.
