College can be a stressful
time, a time of a lot of change, responsibility and hopefully at least a little
fun. After talking to countless people in college, the one thing that we can be
sure of is that majors are important...at least that's what we all seem to
think. We obsess over them, thinking that our major determines our worth. We
think that a science degree somehow has more value than a dance degree. The
thing is, to some people, it does. But what happens when you change your major?
Are you changing how important your education is? The answer is no! My mom
always told me "Just get a degree, I don't care what it is in, you'll
thank yourself later." The thing is she was right! Most of the people I
talked to who were further along in life than me got their degrees in something
completely different than the field that they are in now. Even a lot of the
professors I have had here in college have undergrad degrees in something
completely different than the subject that they teach. The point of a degree is
to learn, but it's also to show that you can thrive in a system where you've
had to learn to be more independent, it's to show a prospective employer that
you sought out the goal of being a college graduate and you stuck to it and
succeed. Take it from someone who has changed their major about 3 times now,
learning how to learn can be much more valuable than what you learn. Unless
you're a prospective doctor or other advanced profession, the undergraduate
degree you get won't affect you too much. So I say change your major and if you
don't like it change it again. Do what will make you happy, there is a degree
in college for just about everyone nowadays and focus on finding
yourself. Whether you're a freshman or a semester away from
graduating, make sure that you're molding your college experience and it's not
molding you.
