Oh Apple, you’ve done it again. When I got my new iPhone 6S last month I kept in mind that the newest version of your operating system would be coming out soon, and that I wouldn’t want to delete my entire life in order to be able to download it, so I opted for the 64GB version. It was the easing iOS upgrade ever because of that simple choice. But for those of you who are debating whether it’s worth freeing up that GB of space, let me tell you what I see as the pros and cons of the iOS 10 update.
1. The messaging features.
They’re a lot of fun; if you have an iPhone 6S, SE, or 7 and can use them to their fullest extent. You can send messages with effects like “invisible ink” or make the whole screen have lasers, but if you have an older model iPhone you won’t be able to use these features in all their might. But let’s be honest, that’s not the end of the world. These features are mostly for fun and you still get a GIF keyboard, and who complains about a GIF keyboard? Also I love that it gives you the option to change your words into emojis when it recognizes them, mostly because it annoys my boyfriend and I think it’s funny.
2. The new pull down notifications thing.
Excuse my very non-technical terms but you know what I’m talking about. Stylistically, it’s not my favorite. Functionally, I love that it separates notifications from apps and gives you a different page for widgets like news and weather. I think it’s more organized and allows for more accessibility. I may not like how it looks, but that’s an opinion and that may not be as big of a deal for you as it is for me.
3. Apple Music got a serious upgrade.
I was one of those people that decided to give Apple Music a chance over well known, well working music streaming apps like Spotify simply because I wanted to be able to access everything on my phone. I pay the monthly subscription, and didn’t have many problems other than that sometimes my music would just stop playing even with perfect service and so far with the update I haven’t been having that problem. Also, I love the new look. I find it way more functional and think that I will use it way more often than I have been. However, I spoke to a friend that doesn’t use Apple Music and he wasn’t pleased with the new look because it took away his ability to basically ignore Apple Music if you don’t use it. So if you don’t use Apple Music, that’s something you should consider.
So, after about a week with iOS 10, overall I like the upgrade and find that 3D touch, the new style (while it may not look as nice), and the overall updates will allow for more accessibility. But that’s my opinion. I think it’s worth freeing up that precious 1GB of space, but if you just can’t spare it, than iOS 9 is still perfectly useful and you won’t be missing out on anything life changing.
