20-year-old Sierah Joughin had been last seen out for a bike ride on a country road in rural Northwest Ohio. Her bike was later found abandoned in a cornfield. And few days later, investigators found her remains on the property of a 57-year-old man, along with the potential for more victims.
Investigators also found a hidden room in the man's barn that included torture equipment.
This news shattered the feeling of safety I'd grown up with here in Northwest Ohio. I am 21, and I've gone on plenty of bike rides alone, surrounded by cornfields. That could have been me. It all hit too close to home.
I'm left with a lot of questions and frustrations but few answers. The world is a scary place, and it keeps getting scarier. But together, we can work to change that. We can do better.
