Chance the Rapper is an artist that has taken the music industry by storm. Unlike most artists in the music industry Chance refuses to sign a record deal. The Chicago native became an instant hit with Acid Rap, his 2013 mixtape. What makes his sound so different is the fact he uses real instrument rather than 808’s and other digital sounds. His sound is very distinct and unlike anyone else’s. Since his explosion into the music industry you can find him featuring on multiple songs including those performed by Action Bronson, Justin Bieber, Snakehips, and Tinashe just to name a few. He has also made guest appearances on television shows such as The Late Show With Stephan Colbert, Saturday Night Live, and The Tonight show.

It seems as though 2016 has been a pretty big year for Chance. In early May he released his newest mixtape “Coloring Book”. The anticipated drop trended instantly. The mixtape included features of Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Future, T-Pain, and Ty Dolla $ign. As a result, Chance’s talents were put in the running for Lyricist of the Year, Best New Hip Hop Artist, and Best Mixtape at the BET Hip Hop Awards. He was also nominated for Best Hip-Hop Video for “Angels” at the MTV Video Music Awards. He currently is on an international tour with most locations being sold out.

As for his life outside of the music, Chance is a huge activist against gun violence. In 2014 alongside his father, he promoted the #SaveChicago campaign and watched the city go without a shooting in 42 straight hours. He also has joined other musical artists to promote racial justice. He also was the recipient of Chicago’s Outstanding Youth of The Year.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
