We all remember the Emo phase, right? But was it really a phase or did we just grow out of our badly thinned haircuts and thick bangs look? And who can't forget the heavy eyeliner look? We rocked band tees from Hot Topic and thickly studded belts. Our arms were covered with accessories like thick bands with sayings on them or just chain bracelets. Basically, we all looked like raccoons with long hair and this including boys too.
Okay, who thought this was a good look?
But in all seriousness, did we ever grow out of the emo phase. We may dress differently and look differently, and yet when we hear that G note sound we stop whatever it is that we're doing just to hear Gerard's first verse in The Black Parade. See, I love the emo phase as much as the next person. I love showing my emo pictures, my Spotify playlists are all pop-punk songs, and I still put on heavy eyeliner for a night out.
So what I thought was just a phase, it is actually not. I believed that I was the only one who loved to reminisced on the emo days, but turns out a lot of people my age miss it too. What I always wanted to throw an emo party and play emo throwbacks and have a good time.
So it turns out that there's this event called Emo Nite La, and they pretty much tour the U.S. and they just throw parties and they play all of our favorite emo songs. I hadn't heard of it until last year, I saw that Demi Lovato was going to Emo Nite and I was intrigued. So I decided to do some research on it. And I had found out that they were actually making a stop in Orlando, Fl. So I bought two tickets for my best friend and me.
Lemme tell you how it was the best experience ever. First of all, they're not DJs, they're just people my age who play music from their Spotify account. They have balloons that say "SAD AF" but everyone was anything but sad here.
I always thought I was the weirdo who was obsessed with pop-punk music but turns out that their are plenty of us out there. The venue was packed, people were smushed up together. When they started to play music, the first song they played was Fall Out Boy's Sugar We're Going Down. Everyone got so hyped and we were all jamming.
I was surrounded by my best friend and strangers, but I never felt so at place before. I felt like I knew these people and that we've been friends for years. We all knew all the lyrics to the songs being played, we danced, we partied on stage. IT WAS LIT. Honestly it was the best night I have ever had this far in my life. I danced on stage while Nick from The Spill Canvas was choosing the playlist. It was amazing.
So it is safe to say that being Emo will live on.
Sorry mom, it is definitely not just a phase.
