For the past week we have seen it all over social media-- the killing of Harambe the Gorilla. Some say it was a senseless act and that it wasn’t necessary. We have seen the way animals have been held in captivity and anyone who dares to enter their territory are in serious danger. Animals are important to this world, as they help bring balance to everything that is on this earth. When it comes down to whether an animal’s life is more important than a humans life, or the other way around, people try and defend both sides of the spectrum.
The video has gone viral since the incident and in the video we see the gorilla drag a little boy through the water. Hearts dropped as a reaction when people saw this, and they were terrified for the child. Many have come to the animal’s defense and have said it was wrong for killing him, but what if the child did die in the hands of this strong beast? Would it still be considered a tragedy? An animal’s life is still important, but when it comes to choosing between an animal and a human, it seems the animal’s life is more important.
A large animal that weighs over 200 pounds and has sharp teeth and is strong is considered dangerous. There are many people who are being killed in this country over a senseless act, and the only people who mourn are close relatives. A lot goes into question about security in zoos, people's safety, and whether keeping animals in captivity is a great idea. The parents of the 3 year old boy who entered the gorilla cage are not the ones to be blamed. Every child slips away from their parents at a point in time. For the people who may not have any children, here are some facts about them:
- Children are curious.
- They will find a way to satisfy their curiosity.
- It may or may not be dangerous to their well-being.
With that being said, no matter how much a parent may keep a close eye on their child, they will find a way to get to what they want.
What happened at that zoo was a sad situation, and an animal lost his life. Animals can be unpredictable, and we will never know what might have happened if the animal was shot and killed. A little boy’s life is saved and has a future. Imagine if that was your son, brother, nephew in that cage would you still want Harambe to be tranquilized?
