iPhones & Eye Strain: Decreasing My Screen Time

There is only so much Night Shift and Dark Mode can do.

iPhones & Eye Strain: Decreasing My Screen Time

In This Article:

Last week, my average screen time on my iPhone was 10 hours and 56 minutes. This was pretty standard screen time for the last few months with me.

While I knew it was a bad thing, I found it hard to cut down on my time (and I still do as it is a working process). I was spending hours watching YouTube, Tik Tok, and Netflix mainly as entertainment is a hobby if that counts. I also have to mention games, music, other social media, and more as well.

I knew it was bad for my eyes despite using both Night Shift and Dark Mode all the time. I also knew it was bad for my time management and productivity with various tasks I want to accomplish.

This week, my average screen time is 6 hours and 16 minutes. Objectively, this is probably still bad. But I think it's also bad to ignore small achievements and not recognize improvements! I'm proud of myself for an around 5-hour difference in a week. It was simple changes that helped me cut down my online time. It took some effort, simply because I am used to spending all of my free time online.

Here is what I did instead:

1. Read Novels

I am guilty of purchasing books, putting them on my shelf, and not thinking of them again. I started reading for fun again during my down time and I am very much enjoying it. It is a form of entertainment that takes my eyes away from screens, but is just as immersive as any show or movie.

If you're curious about what book I read this week, I read "Everything I Never Told You" by Celeste Ng, (it was good).

2. Get A Job

This one is both more drastic and more simple than the others. I got a job.

I had a ton of free time so I figured it would be something productive to do rather than spending days on my phone. There are obviously a ton of other benefits to working, but for the purposes of keeping my screen time down, this worked perfectly.

3. Do Mini Projects

I don't know about you, but I have a growing To-Do list with stuff that I have told myself that I will do in the future and the time never comes where I do it.

I decided now is the time to do those projects. One example of a mini project I did that I have been pushing off is creating a photo album. I bought a small printer and began printing family photos and such that are only in my online camera roll and put them in an album.

It was quick to do, but satisfying to complete.

All in all, spending less time on my phone has made days feels more special and longer. I would definitely recommend if you can. It's worth a try.

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
