On September 7th, Apple released their new iPhone 7 and 7plus. For the past several years, September signifies the release of a new generation of iPhone. This year, the iPhone 7 has received a lot of criticism for some of its new features, one of which is that it is doing away with the headphone jack in an attempt to transition towards wireless headphones. But what exactly does this new iPhone have to offer?
According to Apple, the “iPhone 7 dramatically improves the most important aspects of the iPhone experience. It introduces advanced new camera systems. The best performance and battery life ever in an iPhone. Immersive stereo speakers. The brightest, most colorful iPhone display. Splash and water resistance. And it looks every bit as powerful as it is.”
First off, the iPhone 7 comes in two sizes; 4.7-inch or the 5.5-inch. These are the same sizes as the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s plus, so there is really nothing new here when it comes to sizes. The iPhone 7 and 7 plus have done away with the space gray color, and have replaced it with two new colors; black with a matte finish and high-gloss jet black. In addition to these two new colors, the iPhone 7 will continue to be available in silver, gold, and rose gold. Personally, I am a big fan of these two new colors. Matte colors have always been a favorite of mine. The only downside to the new jet black color is that it is only available in the 128GB or 256GB capacity. The iPhone 7 and 7 plus are also the first iPhones to feature a capacity of 256GB. With a size this big, it will be rare for us to get those pesky “Not Enough Storage” pop-ups.
Another amazing feature about the new iPhone 7 is that they are built to be water-resistant. With this new feature, pushing our friends into pools can once more become a reality, without the fear that their phone will be ruined as a result. From what I’ve witnessed so far, this is the one feature that people are most excited about.
iPhone 7 will also have a new camera and some exciting new features as well. The camera will now have an aperture of f/1.8, allowing users to have better control over the depth of field. A lower aperture will also allow for more light to be let into the camera, increasing its ability to take photos in low-light situations. As someone who loves photography, no matter what time of day, I am extremely excited about this feature. iPhone 7s camera will also come with “optical image stabilization” in order to reduce blur resulting from motion. The iPhone 7 plus doesn’t just have one camera, it has two! So why do we need two camera right next to each other you may be asking. While one of the cameras is the same wide-angle camera on the iPhone 7, the second lens is a telephoto camera that has a higher-quality zoom. This dual camera system works together to ensure that photos are super sharp, no matter what environment the photo is being taken in.
The last change to the iPhone 7 I want to focus on is the fact that the headphone jack has been removed. Many people are concerned that now, all headphones will no longer come with cords. This however is simply not true. Although cordless earbuds are now being sold, the headphones that come in the box with your iPhone upon purchase have cords. However, now the cord will plug into the lightning port where you charge the phone. Also included in the box will be an adapter that will allow you to turn the lightning port into a headphone jack. This means that you won’t have to throw out all of your old headphones!
I myself am pretty excited about the new iPhone release! However at a starting price of $649 for the 7 and $769 for the 7 plus, I think I’m going to stick with my iPhone 6 for now, and wait until next year in order to upgrade to the iPhone 7, but at least now I know what to look forward to!
