An Open Letter to My Dog

Long-distance relationships suck.

An Open Letter to My Dog

Dear Wienerman,

It’s been almost exactly one month since we last saw each other, but it feels like so much longer. I knew it would be hard to make this long-distance thing work, and yet it still surprises me how much I miss you. Those 158 miles between us seem to form an impassable distance (especially since your legs are like four inches long).

The truth is, living without you is hard. I miss falling asleep next to you every night. I miss your kisses and your cuddles and the way you light up when you see me. I miss going on long walks, just you and me. I miss having you by my side every day, unfailingly, no matter what.

And I know it’s hard being the one left behind. It’s not fair that I’m off at college, living out my dreams and having the time of my life, while you’re stuck at home waiting. I wish you could be here to experience everything right along with me, but we both know that’s not possible. (Mostly because pets are not allowed in my sorority house.) Just know that I think about you all the time, and you’re always with me in my heart.

So I just have one thing to ask of you. Live your life. Don’t let your whole world revolve around waiting for me. I promise you, I am coming back. I’m not sure when, but this separation is not permanent. In the meantime, I want you to enjoy all the little doggy pleasures the world has to offer. I want you to run around the backyard and bark at the neighbors and take naps in the sun and be happy. That’s all I’ve ever wanted for you.

Someday, we’ll be together for real, and I won’t ever have to leave again. Until then, don’t forget about me. I know I could never forget about you.

I love you, Wienerman.

I’ll see you soon.

Love always, Jessica

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
