Hello, everyone! Hope you have had a wonderful time with your family and friends over winter break and are all charged up for the quarter ahead. As we settle in for classes and exams, here are 6 new inventions and events waiting for us in 2017 that would surely catch your attention.

Cow-less Milk?!

2017 could be the year where we could see milk on grocery shelves that tastes exactly like cow milk minus the cow. California-based startup Perfect Day’s founders have been working on this ingenious idea wherein they obtained a specific yeast named Buttercup from the U.S Department of Agriculture. A cow’s DNA sequence was obtained, 3-D printed and inserted into the yeast. The yeast ferments sugars to create real milk proteins that when combined with plant-based fats to get lactose-free milk

Hyperloop One

It is a fact that air travel is expensive, it takes time and places immense strain on the few natural resources we have remaining. Hyperloop is a Los Angeles based company trying to commercialize the use of the Hyperloop to quickly transport people and cargo using the technology we may have imagined only existed in science fiction movies. Using an electric motor and a low-pressure tube, a levitating pod will accelerate and decelerate to provide a silent and turbulent free ride. The Hyperloop One will see its first system test this year and we hope for the best.

Project Wing

Commercial drone deliveries have been a topic of discussion for the past few years and we may finally see it become a commercial reality. As part of Alphabet’s bold plan (Google’s parent company), customers will soon be able to take home deliveries to the next level by means of drones that will air-drop parcels at customer’s homes. With approval from the Federal Aviation Administration, your new books and pizza may soon come dropping down from the sky…literally.

Head Transplant

Heart transplants, liver transplants, kidney transplants are all old school now. This year, we may see a revolutionary breakthrough in medical history as an Italian neurosurgeon named Sergio Canavero will attempt to transplant the head of 31-year-old Valery Spiridonov onto a healthy donor. This procedure will involve cooling Spiridonov’s body, severing muscle tissue in his neck and using a diamond knife to precisely cut his spinal cord. A few years ago we may have imagined this to be a product of a science fiction movie but this year we may witness a marvel of modern medicine

Nintendo Switch

Nintendo has given us some memorable gaming consoles such as the GameCube, Gameboy and the Wii but in recent years, we have not seen particularly remarkable offerings from the Japanese console giant. However, 2017 could see the arrival of the Nintendo Switch, a system to enable gamers to effortlessly switch from playing their games from televisions to the Switch console. An ingenious proposition that we cannot wait to experience for ourselves!

And there we have it; six interesting inventions we may see some time this year! 2017 is already off to a good start and let's hope it keeps us pleasantly surprised throughout the year. Leave us a comment below and tell us what caught your attention and share what you are looking forward to for 2017.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
