Hey Readers!!

As a new content creator, I decided that my first article should be an introduction of myself and why I decided to start writing for Odyssey as part of the Rider University community.

My name is Skylin Riedweg. Let's stop here. I am often asked where my name comes from. My father liked the name Skylynn after seeing a young girl by that name singing in a club as a young adult. He decided that if he ever had a daughter, that'd be her name. However, he felt the spelling was a bit excessive and decided to change it. Hence, my name. Riedweg... it's pronounced RID-VEG. Riedweg is of German descent but I'm actually part Swiss. Switzerland is bordered by France, Germany and Italy and depending where one lives in Switzerland, they speak one of three languages (French, German, or Italian). As far as my ethnicity, I am of Puerto Rican, Haitian and Swiss descent and am a third generation American.

Moving on... I grew up in North Bergen, New Jersey, which for those of you who don't know is in Hudson County. And for those who don't know where Hudson County is, it's right across the river from Manhattan. Although North Bergen is rather large, it is quite suffocating. There is little to no reprieve of the never ending monotony that is living in North Bergen. This is why I decided to leave the immediate area and not attend a college or university close-by but leave to Rider University.

I come from a blended family as my mother and father separated when I was 5 years old. Both went on to remarry and have more children. All together I have six siblings ranging from 2 to 22 years old. My siblings are more important to me than anything else in this world. I strive to be a role model that my siblings would be proud to look up to.

These are the boring basics of my life. Some fun facts about me are that I have been a pescatarian for the last eight years, I cannot function without eight hours of sleep and a cup of coffee, my favorite color is blue, and I've been dyeing my hair since I was 13 years old.

I decided to become a part of The Odyssey Online community because I think it's important that everyone be allowed to voice their opinions. Often teenagers are silenced because they don't have "real-life" experience. My friend told me about her experience and how she writes about anything and everything she sets her mind to, and I thought "I can do that". I welcome the opportunity to talk about my experiences and hope that you will enjoy my articles as much as I'll enjoy writing them.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
