Introducing Lisa Harris' First Book: "Unveiled Beauty"

Going through college, one place of solace I found was in my sorority. In a school full of more than 50,000 people, it is easy to find yourself lost in the crowd. For me, Greek life not only provided a community, it surrounded me with women who shared similar values, aspirations and a universal understanding that we were united under the letters of our sorority. However, Greek life may not be for everyone or for every age group, but what lies beneath the surface is a desire for women to come together as one for a single purpose.

There is a book coming out this fall that does just that. Lisa Harris' premier poetry book creates a community with her words that makes you feel like you are standing hand in hand with a group of women as you flip through the pages. With her elegant poetry, Harris delves into the intricate layers of being a woman in today's society. Her book, "Unveiled Beauty," not only covers the universal topics of heartache, love and loss, but also addresses sensitive social issues, mental health and a lot of other topics that have the ability to touch a variety of ages and backgrounds.

This is not your typical poetry book. One thing that sets it apart from the others is Harris' pairing of each poem with an original photograph featuring everyday women as her star models. By using photography, Harris is able to capture the beauty of all women. By not having typical models, Harris' poetry becomes more universally identifiable because you are able to see yourself in the shoes of the woman next to her poems. Not only does this create a sense of understanding, it creates comfort knowing that you are not alone in your struggles and in your triumphs.

With one book, Lisa Harris created a community that you can indulge in with the flip of a page.

However, like many of us, it took Harris a few years to truly follow her passion. After working in the fashion industry, writing took a back seat in her life for a few years. Fortunately (for her and us), Harris decided to combine her love for fashion and poetry into one universal icon. It is through "Unveiled Beauty" that the words of a successful businesswoman, mother, fashionista and writer truly come to life.

"Unveiled Beauty" will be released in September. You can get a sneak preview of her content on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by searching for "Fashion Meets Poetry." Additionally, if you are in the Madison, Wisconsin area in August, Lisa will be doing a poetry reading from her book:

Thursday, August 11, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
