I battle constantly with depression and anxiety. One of the best ways that I have found to cope with it is through being active. I don't mean working out in the gym. Tried that, not my cup of tea. And I don't mean going on runs. I only run to food and away from danger (in that order).
I have found that playing intramural sports in college is what helps quell my depression, at least for an hour. I play anything from Spikeball to Volleyball, from Flag Football to Soccer. I will even play basketball even though I can't shoot.
Anyway, here are some pictures from my flag football team this year. We went 1-6, but we played hard and had some really close games. By the way, we are called the Bro-Peeps.
When the captain doesn't take the meeting seriously...
One of our quarterbacks going for a deep throw.
Our other quarterback running the ball for a first down.
Our safety (that's me) making a tackle before the other team can score.
Our safety and one of our cornerbacks both trying to intercept the ball.
One of our cornerbacks making an interception in the end zone. And his celebration afterward.
One of our other cornerbacks making a great play in the end zone. He is only 5'7" but he blocked the ball from someone who was around 6'.
One of our quarterbacks scrambled out of the pocket, made 2 defenders miss-tackle, and ran 66 yards for a touchdown to start the game.
I know that not everyone enjoys being active, but you need to find the one thing that will bring some joy into your life and/or distract you from your depression. And for me that is sports. Actually playing sports. So you will see me as the 85 year old man playing soccer with the young boys.
