Recently I found myself in a mock interview. A what? Yeah, a literal pretend interview. After I answered about my weaknesses and why I would benefit this mock company, the interviewer and I talked about my responses and how to answer better for the real deal. Guess what she also said. She said I was being too modest. What a lovely compliment, I think?
Over the past few years I've had my number of interviews and opportunities to pretend that I know what "business casual" is. This is not as if I'm flipping my hair in the wind at you with all this experience, I just have faked myself into making it. I'm adulting here. Being in a business communication class for the past few months I've had the chance to dissected the art of interviewing and how to get better. Which got me to thinking. I actually really love interviews. I may even find them fun. Why? Let me enlighten you!
I love talking about myself. Especially in an encouraging manner. Aside from getting to know the company and job better, this time is allotted to talk all about me! Talking about my passions and what I'm doing to get there. Talk about an ego boost. Have you ever had someone in a suit laugh at your stories and jokes? It's a solid feeling. This is your chance to really prove why you're the best of the best. Although maybe you're nervous, you have to look at it in a different way. There is someone asking you for stories and experiences AND you get to tell them! You're even the hero to your own stories! How can that be scary? Sure maybe a job is on the line, but if you're confident in yourself, they'll see that.
Don't be nervous, but if you are, also be excited! A chance to meet people in a field you're interested in, talk about yourself, and land an awesome job experience. Interviews are great.
