When we enter college, we try to figure out what we want to be in life. We start off by picking a major and organizations that go with it and finally start to see the path that we are going on. For some people, they start off with what fraternity or sorority to join to make their decision a little bit easier. When a person thinks of Greek life, he or she may think it is just parties and letters; however, it is so much more than that. As I interviewed Ms. Briana Brown, a psychology major and a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, I started to get an inside look as to what Greek life is all about!
What made you interested in a sorority?
"I honestly enjoy being active and bettering my community. Reaching out and helping others and making a difference makes me happy. And really, that's what it's all about. Although Greek life is fun and we "turn up": however, at the end of the day, we are all working towards the goal of making a difference helping and influencing others positively. Both in and out of the community."
What was your mindset going in?
"My mindset going into Greek life was that it would make me a better person. Like Brii 2.0. I knew that Greek life could give me everything I wanted and connections too! I felt like by default, I'd be inclined to better myself. To be in Greek life, you have to have and maintain a certain GPA so I was thinking, of course my grades would stay on "fleek". But I also went in thinking what I could do for greek life and how I could expand and apply my leadership skills. Also, I did think that being Greek on campus would possibly draw attention to myself and I'm not one to bask in the spotlight. But it's not bad, it's all cool!"
Why Zeta?
"Zeta is the only sorority that stood out to me; like, they just had it all, plus the eta lambda chapter members were cool. But Zeta is a trailblazing sorority. And I'm all about starting stuff and being the first to do something. One thing I like the most is that Zeta is accepting of who people truly are. You don't have to change who you are or who you hang with. You don't have to look a certain way. You can be you and it's so down to earth. Also, the sisterhood is real, the family is real and it's great being constitutionally bound to a frat. There is so much love and support from the blue and white family."
What do you like about being a Zeta? In a sorority in general?
"I love the sisterly/brotherly bound. I didn't get to grow up with my four siblings, so I was seeking a real bond and Zeta provided that."
How did it feel after you crossed?
"After I crossed, I was so overwhelmed with happiness and I felt like I was reborn into a new, better version of myself."
Was it all worth it?
"Yes, of course! I would not trade it for anything."
Greek week; I know you love it! How is that for you?
"Greek week is awesome because you get to interact with other Greeks on campus and get to learn more about their frats and sororities. It is a bonding experience and it's fun! We work together to form a step show where frats and sororities combine with each other and compete."
What advice would you give to a young lady or anyone who wants to be apart of Greek life?
"I would say join not because of its colors or who is in the chapter, but join because you have a personal connection with them. I would also say be committed. Joining a sorority or fraternity is not a sport and it can be a life time commitment. When looking for a sorority or frat to join, keep your options open and seek what's right for you!"
Briana has been a friend to me since my freshman year, and I can say that she has never changed even with her beautiful blue and white colors! Now that you know how her experience was, you can decide for yourself if going Greek is the right thing for you!
What organizations are you a part of?
