Interview: Ten Friends' Favorite Songs And Why

I asked each of my friends what their favorite song was. After a little bit of moaning, a few finally gave up a name as one of their favorites. I wanted to know what made a song a favorite. Here are ten of my friends' favorite songs and the reasoning behind each choice.

1. Jessie: Depth Over Distance by Ben Howard

"This is my favorite song because the first time I heard it was a chilly autumn day and I was sitting on a park bench. Every time I think of the song it reminds me of that day and it makes me happy."

2. Me: If I Believe You//The 1975

This is my favorite song because I can connect to the character's hardships and adversities, especially in the line, "I'm broken and bleeding, and begging for help, And I'm asking you Jesus, show yourself." Later on, the song also displays confusion if Jesus is really there in the rap, something I can also relate to.

3. Sarah: Thanks for Nothing//Brandyn Brunette

"Thanks for nothing just gets me really pumped and I like music that I can jam to and it just gets me happy in the car with the windows down."

4. Rachel: Closer//The Chainsmokers

"Their voices in the song are amazing and it just makes me want to move."

5. Victoria: Pas De Deux (from the Nutcracker)// Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky

"The song is the epitome of the romantic music era because of the flawless layering of instrument. Seeing it performed live makes my heart swell with the emotions of love and loss. It makes a longing in my heart that is only explainable through music."

6. Anna: Love Me//The 1975

"Because it's super original and I really like the band. It's got a really cool background."

7. Milica: Never Been Like You//Flume

"It's catchy and it has a good album cover."

8. Maggie: Famous//Kanye West

"It's my freaking jam!"

9. Isaac: Long Time//Boston

"The lyrics are great and comparable and I love their bassist."

10. Jane: Walking On Sunshine//Katrina and the Waves

I didn't get a second to ask my mom why this is her favorite song, but it definitely embodies her. She likes being energetic and happy and looking at the positive side of life, which is what this song is all about. I'm sure it picks her up when she's not feeling so happy with it's positive vibe.

What made each of these songs so special? The emotions they brought each person. Once again, the effect of music on our emotions and mood is truly incredible.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
