Today, having an internship is pretty much the standard. Nearly every college or university requires its students to have at least one if not two internships to graduate.
While having this requirement on top of a hefty stack of academic requirements can be exhausting, it is for sure worth the time. Even better, tons of internships are now paid!
1. You become a professional email-crafting wizard.
2. You learn how to dress for success.
I don't think I realized how few items of professional clothing I had until this summer when I began my internship. It was a huge bummer that leggings and flannels would no longer cut it, but I do love any excuse to go shopping. But looking professional doesn't mean you can't dress like you. More than anything, it is expected that you look put together.
3. Your teamwork skills improve.
Sure, in college you have to work in groups for projects, but somehow in the professional world, teamwork looks a lot different. Your boss doesn't care whether Suzy didn't pull her weight. Complaining will not change anything so when it comes down to it, you have to figure it out.
4. You're pushed to speak your mind (effectively).
I personally struggle with verbally expressing what I'm feeling or thinking. I often need time to collect my thoughts before speaking. This summer I have really been pushed to improve my communication skills. When you're working with others, speaking your mind is a productive and articulate manner is essential. Even if you don't fall in love with public speaking, I promise an internship will reveal confidence you never knew existed.
5. Networking.
I am tired of hearing "you need to network" as much as the next person. I hate small talk and therefore hate any situation where mingling is involved, but, dare I say it, networking is so so so important. You don't have to believe me, but those connections you make today can help your career down the road. If you one day apply for a job and have a terrible interview, a connection you made at a networking event can be the reason you're given a second chance. Let's face it, it is about who you know.
6. Helps you find direction.
Okay, time for a real quick testimonial. I'm not sure if I've mentioned this, but I'm a Political Science/Peace and Conflict Studies double major. Due to that, I am constantly asked: "What do you plan on doing with that?" I. Don't. Know. Or, I guess, I didn't. My internship has shown me a world of careers I never knew existed. Even if you don't have a great experience, at least you know what you don't want to do for the rest of your life. This is your chance to take your professional future for a test drive. Don't buy that car until you know it's for you.
7. Helps you realize your worth.
Don't forget, having an internship is for you. Take the opportunity to try new things, meet new people. Challenge yourself. When you finish your internship you will be amazed by how much you've accomplished and by just how great you are. You have some much to offer this world- take this moment to shine.
