The Internet Sensation: Harambe

In Loving Memory

As most of you know, Harambe has become pretty popular on social media. There are memes, videos, photos, articles, and more about him. For those of you who don’t know, Harambe was a Gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo. A three-year-old boy climbed into Harambe’s enclosure and Harambe began “playing” with the boy. Zoo workers had to kill him or else the young child would have been killed by Harambe. Everyone has their own opinions about the killing of Harambe and I intend to keep mine to myself, but Harambe has turned into an internet joke. One I find hilarious.

One of the first things I saw about Harambe was a video by YouTube star, Jenna Marbles. She made a video called “Ear Blood”. She was playing around with a music machine, mashing up different sounds to make a song or beat. She started yelling out, “dicks out for Harambe”. After this, I had to look up who Harambe was. This turned into me finding memes and more videos about him. Here’s the video from Jenna Marbles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63ruIqgxQuU

Then I saw another video about Harambe’s funeral. It’s obviously a joke if you actually watch it, but it’s honestly one of the funniest videos ever to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gz45gK7Tvc

I heard that Harambe is supposed to become a Pokémon. I think this is a little far, but it would be fun to catch Harambe in Pokémon Go. It’d feel like some sort of achievement if you caught him.

Another popular meme that’s been appearing lately is one from the kid’s TV show Arthur. It’s usually a photo of a hand next to a leg and the hand is in a fist. The caption usually has something to be mad about. So of course, people mix Harambe and Arthur into one meme.

There’s even a Spongebob Squarepants meme on Harambe. There was a Spongebob episode where Patrick was dressed in a Gorilla costume, but people have turned it into a Harambe meme saying he did a great performance in Spongebob.

Last one: Remembering Private Harambe. I’d be interested in watching this movie.

On a more serious note, the Huffington Post wrote an article about the Cincinnati Zoo wanting the meme’s to stop. They think he should rest in peace. The Zoo is trying to move past having to kill Harambe because it’s hard for them, so seeing memes, petitions, and jokes about Harambe doesn’t make moving past this easier. I totally understand that, but I also know some people take Harambe dying seriously. I know I do.

I wish there was something that could have happened without Harambe or the boy dying. I don’t think the boy should have climbed in the cage in the first place (where was the mother?), and it breaks my heart when any animal is killed. It’s a sad thing. Obviously, the Zoo did what they had to in order to save the young boy.

The Zoo may want these memes to quit, but I can tell you right now, they aren’t going anywhere. I see new memes everyday among videos and jokes. It’s a big thing right now. A lot of people care about Harambe. Then again, maybe people just like saying, “RIP Harambe”. Don’t forget, keep your dick out in his memory!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
