It’s Tuesday night. I am getting ready to go to bed. I do my usually routine. I brush my hair like a Disney princess, wash my face, floss and brush my teeth, moisturize, and finally check out what’s trending on Twitter before I charge my phone and get to sleep. Little did I know, I would be up for a while reading the craziest story I have ever come across.
Aziah King, also known by her now infamous twitter handle @_Zolarmoon had laid out an epic, wild adventure filled with sex workers, drugs, trap phones, attempted suicide, guns, and a possible murder, all on her twitter account! Please be aware that Zola's story contains violence, sexuality, and readers may find the content highly offensive. The full story has since been taken down but you can read the original story here. I seriously thought it was all a work of pure fiction and I wasn’t the only one who felt that way…
However, Miss King quickly produced evidence to back up her story. In fact, she tracked down the people she had mentioned through social media and showed recent photos of them. Insanity! So what does this mean for these people? I’m hoping this sparks some sort of an investigation. Although from the end of the story it seems that one of them was caught and sentenced to life in prison. That person was not shown in the photos King produced. #shehasnochill
There are aspects of King's story that highlight very serious issues that disturbed me which included but was not limited to violence, sexism, racism, coercion, and drug abuse. Many individuals expressed a variety of sentiments from outrage to genuine concern over the events that have allegedly occurred.
For the most part, this was seen as entertainment. Yes, entertainment. People have begun mentioning possible movie deals and the desire to see this played out on the big screen.
How is it possible that over a hundred tweets have captivated our society to this extent? What has happened to us? Has my generation become so emotionally unattached that we cannot see people as actual human beings, but characters whose tragic lives should be displayed and ridiculed? Has the fabric of our society become so frayed that we pick at the threads of those who live appalling, and shocking lives. Why do we give notoriety to those who glamorize such a lifestyle? I don’t know and honestly I don’t care.
That story was the best thing I’ve read in a long time despite its obvious disregard for literary traditions. As a writing student, I’ve been told to write this way and pay attention to this and that and all these rules that apparently don’t mean shit.
The literary world has just been shot by a bullet that will not stop. Social media is changing the landscape of what we consider literature. Twitter just made this stripper famous and honestly as a writer, I’m a little jealous. I don't quite know if she should be commended but she has captivated. I for one, am very interested in seeing what happens next.
