Idol worshiping is a practice that has continued for centuries, and while it is not specific to one belief system, it affects the way we make our decisions in our day to day life and how we view ourselves as well as others. Unfortunately, our society condones a selfish attitude and has made it the norm. Society makes it easier to take ourselves as our own idols due to the egotistical view we have of the world. We are the "selfie" generation, but we have become selfish due to our egos. We worship ourselves.
The crux of the matter is this social ill that our generation permits and even endorses through "selfies" and social media. All these platforms do not only promote self empowerment, but also self worship due to the attention to minute detail and flaws. We are the "selfie" generation, but we have become selfish in our actions. We cannot allow ourselves to be the judge of ourselves because we are too busy defending our shortcomings, when we should be acknowledging our faults and trying to correct them. We justify our wrongs and neglect them on purpose so that we can continue to wallow in our self worth. There is no accountability for ourselves and "owning our actions" has become just a saying rather than a practice. It is easier to suppress that conscious inside of us rather than acknowledging our mistakes. We allow ourselves to sacrifice our intellect for our ego to achieve temporary gratification.
Our egos have always been inside of us, but it is our negligence towards it that creates a lack of control and allows our ego to control us. Self evaluation is the only way we can understand the influence our ego has over ourselves. Thinking is the first step in moving forward. By contemplating, we are practicing the most vital part of us as human beings, and by doing so we become better versions of ourselves. By allowing our egos to control ourselves, we degrade to a basic animal level because we ignore the greatest part of ourselves-- our intellect. By allowing our egos to gain control, we also permit other ills to enter our heart, such as narcissism and conceit. These ills inside of us is caused by our own egos and the control that we allow it to have over us.
If only we can be strong enough to account for our vices and accept that we give ourselves too much credit. If only we admit to worshiping ourselves because our ego has more control than we have over it. If only we allowed ourselves to be better people, rather than remaining stuck in this egotistical perspective.
We are idol for ourselves since we allow ourselves to be slaves to our ego. It does not just influence our decisions but is controlling the way we view ourselves and the world.
