It's that time of the year; classes are beginning, campuses are buzzing, and the wave to snatch an internship is in full swing!
More people are interning now than ever before, which makes for more competition and more pressure to succeed. These tips and tricks can help you impress your colleagues, leave a lasting impression in the workroom, and create connections that could benefit your future in your field of work.
1) Present yourself as a professional.
This ranges from what you wear to the way you present yourself online on your social media platforms. Try to always look and sound like an adult! You may have to take a trip to the mall for a pantsuit, but trust me it will be worth it! (Pro tip: ask clothing stores if they accept student discounts - most do!)
Additionally if your employer were to search your name online, your social media should be perfected. Create a LinkedIn profile and keep it up-to-date and put any personal social media accounts on private if needed.
2) Make the most of the experience.
Internships are a learning experience, so definitely try to make the most of your time in the office. Ask questions when needed, and be willing to take on any and everything. Your willingness to learn and your flexibility will not go unnoticed.
3) Collaborate/befriend your fellow interns.
It is human nature to try to compete with people who are sharing the same position as you, but you are not making the best of your time that way. Befriend them, spend your lunch breaks together, and keep in touch. Think about your fellow interns as another connection you can make, especially since you are pursuing similar work fields!
4) Your boss is your boss.
In some cases, it can be easy to picture your boss as a friend over a boss. However, the line needs to be drawn and they should be treated as, well... your boss. Communicate through emails professionally, stray away from text messages, and only speak to them about your personal life if they bring it up in conversation. Your work ethic and professionalism is typically the most important thing in their eyes.
5) Make a lasting impression.
When your internship comes to an end, wrap everything up strongly. Remember to ask for a letter of recommendation or a reference, and be sure to write a hand-written thank you note to all of the professionals you worked with in the office.
Now it's time to go after that internship you've been eyeing! You can do this, put your big pants on!
