Fiction On Odyssey: The Intern

Jared had just graduated and managed to get accepted as an intern at a gaming company thanks to his cousin that worked there. He hoped that his lifelong dream of becoming a game developer would finally come true. As he boarded the bus with other people that worked at the company, he felt like all the hard work he had put in was finally paying off. He got off the bus and walked towards the tall office building, and smiled as he used his shiny new lanyard to unlock the door.

He had spent all of the last couple of weeks coming up with game ideas, characters, plots and brought all of his best ideas to show to his mentor. However, when Jared arrived at work it was nothing like he had expected. As soon as Jared entered the room and greeted his mentor, he was treated as if he didn't even exist. All day he was ordered around to run errands, run copies and get coffee for all the meetings. Everytime he tried to bring up his ideas at a meeting or talk to his mentor he was told to just be patient and do his duty.

As soon as he was two minutes into what was supposed to be a ten minute break, he was given a list of food to pick up for the workers´ lunch. Sighing, he picked up the list and placed his order at the restaurant, while waiting for the food he got to thinking just why he was doing all of these irrelevant errands.Frustrated and angry, Jared stepped outside and called up his cousin and ranted to him with a long list of complaints. His cousin explained to him that it was only the very first day, and that he should be patient and just do the task he was given to the best of his ability. He explained to Jared that he was once an intern himself and when his mentor saw that he was working very diligently in every small task he was given, even running errands, he got promoted. However his cousin's advice went in through one ear and out the other, he was so goal-oriented and impatient that he was ready to quit as soon as things didn't go his way.

Jared decided enough was enough and decided to quit that instant. Without even picking up the food he started jogging towards the bus station. Just as he was about to call up his mentor and quit on the phone he heard a loud horn. Before he could react the world went black.

A shiny new lanyard fell to the ground.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
