As somebody who has beaten just about every one of these trends to death, I’m telling you from the other side that you need to stop. Don’t be that person.
1. The lyrics to any popular Drake song
“I only love my bed and my mama, I’m sorry.”
"I can't really see another squad tryna cross us"
“24-hour champagne diet”
Please don’t be this person. If you’re gonna do it, just make sure you’re one of the first.
2. Captions that you’ve Google translated
If you’re gonna do it, please just make sure it’s accurate.
3. Several posts of the same day, posted several days in a row
I thought the problem would’ve been resolved when Instagram added the feature where you can share multiple photos in one post. Turns out y’all still didn’t get the memo. If anything, do us a favor and make a story if you’re going to do it anyways.
4. Tagging all of your friends on top of each other in a photo
I never really understood this trend. Maybe people do it so the picture appears on their friends’ profiles. Regardless, you don’t know who anybody is which makes stalking really inconvenient.
5. Sarcastically captioning anything pretending to be underwhelmed
“He/She’s Alright I guess”
“The view was alright”
Just no.
6. Pic-stitches
Didn't think I'd have to say this post-2014, but people disappoint.
Instagram has spruced up its platform so we can now post more than one picture in one post. Hence, the need for cramming a thousand pictures into 12 tiny frames is eliminated.
7. Bikini pictures with self-deprecating captions
Just own it. Clearly, you’re posting the picture, so don’t fish for compliments with a caption like this.
8. Excessive hashtags
Hashtags can be really effective, and lead users to content they’re interested in. However, Instagram users have clearly found their way around this. If you still write #likeforlike on your picture, I’m judging you.
9. Pictures and captions that could jeopardize future employment opportunities
As a college student, it’s easy to get wrapped up inside of the bubble and feel invincible. If you love posting drunk selfies, I recommend creating a finsta.
Instagram gives its users the opportunity to create their own personal brand. Posting pictures of yourself that would concern an AA sponsor may not be working in your favor post-grad.
10. Every other post being an ad
I have never been more motivated to apply to be on the next season of the Bachelor. These people are clearly making a living off of promoting different products which is great for them, but sufficiently annoying for the rest of us.
11. Being concerned with your ratio
This isn’t as much of a trend, as it is the inherent desire to feel desired. Don’t be the person that follows me so I follow you back, just so you can unfollow me. Seems like a lot of work and you’re probably annoying.
12. Liking your own pictures
I feel like the fact that you like your own picture is implied, considering you posted it. Is the one like really making a difference?
13. Announcing that you have a new post in your story
Is it really necessary? If algorithms work the way they’re supposed to, I’ll see your picture, and likely your story, which will probably make me less interested in both.
