Inspiring Female TV Characters

As an avid TV watcher, and as someone who finds a new series to watch every month or so, I tend to become obsessed with characters. I start to become attached to them and their story, so much to the point where I end up dreaming about them. I know this isn't uncommon because I know a lot of people who are completely invested in a show.

Anyway, I have recently been watching TV shows that have a lot of powerful female characters and I wanted to compile a list of these characters and their positive qualities - and why I think they are strong and inspiring.

Also, I had a really rough time making this list, considering the fact that there are a TON of characters who deserve to be one of the top three, so I made an "honorable mentions", because I think we should celebrate every female character. This list may contain a few spoilers, but I will try to keep them to a minimum.

1. Octavia Blake - The 100

In The 100, Octavia Blake (Marie Avgeropoulos) starts off as the young girl on The Ark (a spaceship that was used to save the human race after war broke out on Earth), who hid under the floor boards in order to survive. She was always underground and hidden from the light of day, and even lost her mother after the authorities discovered that she had an extra child when each family was only allowed one in order to prevent overpopulation. After the death of her mother and a few years in the Ark's juvenile prison, she and her brother, Bellamy Blake, went to Earth with other criminals. They have to survive and Octavia Blake changes. She changes from a young, fearful child into a strong, warrior, and eventually a leader. She goes through a rollercoaster of situations including near-death experiences, fights with her brother, and the death of her soul mate. But no matter what, she keeps going. She continues to be strong, so she and her friends can survive.

Honorable Mentions:
Raven Reyes
Luna
Lexa
Clarke Griffin

2. Charlie Bradbury - Supernatural

Charlie Bradbury (Felicia Day) met the Winchester boys after being hired by one of the most evil monsters on planet Earth - the Leviathon. After successfully defeating theese ancient creatures, she swore of hunting, for a while, and lived in a live-action role playing world, but Sam and Dean found her by chance once again. After this instance, she was pulled in, and even found her home - Oz. Yes, she lived in the land of Oz. Charlie is a character who believed. She was a hacker turned hunter, but she never lost hope even when she had the hardest of tasks. In my opinion, she lived a life worth living and lived it beautifully. She was never afraid of being herself and she was always there for those who needed her. Not to mention the fact that she is a genius and can hack anything, including ancient biblical texts written in a language no one from the last two centuries can speak, all while fighting off a Frankenstein monster. Sounds pretty awesome right.

Honorable Mentions:
Jody Mills
Donna Hanscum
Amara
Claire Novak

3. Michonne - The Walking Dead

If anyone knows Michonne (Danai Gurira) from The Walking Dead then they know that she means business. She has the strength to joke a tiger and kill hoards of zombies. Also, if anyone knows her background, they know how messed up her life has been and how much terror she has faced. She didn't speak a lot at first, but nevertheless she is intelligent and a force to be reckoned with - and we see that after the fact that she tied up two zombies like dogs, broke their jaws and walked around with them as a form of camouflage. She can take out a hoard of zombies with one sword and survive the most unimaginable scenarios. She thrives during her hard times and always finds a way, and she also finds love at the most unexpected times.

Honorable Mentions:
Maggie Greene
Carol Peletier
Beth Greene

Like I said, this list was hard to compile, but my point in general is the fact that there a lot of inspiring female characters nowadays. Every one of these women (including the honorable mentions) made it through and came out on the other side. They're strong and resilient, like woman.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
