Tattoos possibly originated around 12,000 BCE, and have had a rich background. First seen (but started before) during the construction of the Great Pyramids of Egypt, the art form spread with the culture through the Middle East and Asia.
Some cultures were used for indicating skills, others were to ward away illness. Tattoos were used to specify clan membership, or if a woman was ready for marriage. The Greeks even used skin markings for communication among spies. It began to fade away from common traditions in Europe from the 12th to the 16th centuries.
Today, tattoos can symbolize stories, people, memories, or are just a work of art. They can be large, they can be small, or they can be somewhere in between. With a variety of shapes and colors, each tattoo has a different meaning, which is very different from history. While tattoos were a common and sometimes almost a revered concept, today they are considered a taboo by many individuals. Some believe that tattoos are "ugly" or "distasteful." It's been documented that employers are less likely to hire someone with visible tattoos.
As tattoos are an art form, there are different types and trends in the field. Tiny tattoos are now considered the desirable form of ink by many young adults around the world. These small images are full of meaning, and some are hardly even noticeable. Will this change the idea of "Tattoo Taboo?"
