“New Year new me,” says everyone on social media as 2016 approaches. New Year’s Eve/Day is a holiday of self-reflection. Which is why it is our job as human beings to make a list in our head of all our flaws and pick one that we can change.
There is no denying that New Year's Eve is a holiday for relationships. Fancy Italian restaurants become booked, champagne is the drink of choice, and people dress to impress. That is unless you are single, in which case you have no obligations to fulfill.
Having no obligations there are several options left for those living the single life on New Year’s Eve. If you are not sure if you are single (modern day relationships are ridiculously complicated) here is the definition: not married or not having a serious romantic relationship with someone (also commonly referred to as a thing). If such a description applies to you then this list most likely pertains to how you spent your New Year’s Eve:
1. Drinking
Coming back from college one must maintain the tolerance to alcohol you worked so hard to obtain in the first place. Drinking is a great way to forget your single sorrows and kick the New Year off right.
2. Sober Driving
If put in the position of being a sober driver there are two possible explanations as to why you upheld such a position. First, you are a genuinely good person. Just because you weren’t having fun tonight didn’t mean your friends should not; realizing this you offered to drive them out of the goodness of your heart. Second and more likely, your friends asked you what you were doing and you made the mistake of saying the word: “nothing.” This resulted in passive aggressive begging, and after hours of texting, you finally said yes to get them off your back.
3. Netflix
Netflix is probably one of the better ways to spend New Year's Eve as a single person. It offers us a chance to escape the real world and enter into one of our choosing. When in need of friends simply watch the show Friends. When wanting the unrealistic relationship we will never have, Netflix offers a variety of Romance movies. The possibilities are endless! It was a long year and you deserved a night of fantasy.
4. Watching the Ball Drop (on TV)
Nothing says New Year's Eve like watching the ball drop in Times Square. Luckily for all the broke people who can’t afford to go to New York and watch the ball drop in person or who simply don’t want to fight the chaos, they have the option of watching the ball drop on TV. A night like this consists of listening to pop hits and watching people make out on television when the clock strikes midnight.
5. Partying with your Parent’s friends

6. Pulling an all-nighter with other single friends
Sleepovers are a good way to catch up with friends you haven’t seen in awhile, except on New Year’s Eve. This was your chance to throw the biggest pity party ever with your best single friends. Misery loves company!
7. Sleeping
A common New Year's resolution is to maintain a healthier lifestyle. There is no better way to do this than sleep. If you had no plans because you are single on the biggest relationship holiday, other than Valentine’s Day, then getting started on that New Year’s resolution sounded like the perfect way to start the year off right.
8. Playing Board Games with the Family

9. Going out to a Movie (maybe even two)

10. Drowning in your own tears
Just kidding. Crying on New Year's Eve doesn’t exist when you are single because being single is awesome. No one should ever be ashamed of being single on New Year's Eve because there is nothing wrong with being single. New Year's Day is a holiday celebrating the new year, not celebrating a relationship, so don’t sweat it if you didn’t have anyone to kiss at midnight. New Year’s Eve was our chance to reflect upon the memories we have collected over the past year and make goals for future memories to come.
So…
Happy 2016!
