I’ve been working at a hotel restaurant for a couple months now and I have experienced my fair share of weird things. My coworkers told me some of their weirdest stories and I am sure those of you who have worked in any customer service position can relate!

1. My coworker was serving a table and when it came time to ask what the ladies were having to drink, one lady said she would have a glass of chardonnay, and the other said, "I’ll have a glass of nice apple juice.” Confused, my friend was like, “You mean like sparkling cidar?” The lady replied, “No like your finest apple juice.” So my coworker brought out our bottled apple juice for her to try and she straight up tried it like she was trying wine. She was like, “ahhh yes, this is lovely, it will pair nicely with my salmon.”

2. One of the hostesses at work had been gone from the front for an awfully long time. So a server went to check on her, she found her in the back freezer looking intently for something. They asked her what she was trying to find and she said, “I’ve been trying to find the ‘a la mode ice cream flavor!”

3. A guy was sitting at our bar and was making small talk with our bartender. He said he wanted a gin and tonic. Sweet, cool, sounds good. But then he asked, “What do you put in your gin and tonic?” Well sir, we start out with gin….and then add some tonic….

4. There was a couple sitting outside next to some blooming plants. They asked their server if she could do something about all of the bugs. She said, “Yes, we have a bug free table!” They were so excited, “Where is it?!” She replied, “Inside.”

5. A guy ordered brussel sprouts, and when he got them, his server asked how they were. He said, “They were so hard I could have put them in my slingshot and killed a bird with them.”

6. A lady came up to me and asked where the dumpsters were so she could throw away some trash. I told her I had no problem taking them out for her. She was like, “Are you sure? You don’t have to do that!” I took the bags from her and went to head to the dumpster. She walked away singing, “You are such a beautiful person!”

I am sure there are hundreds more crazy stories I could share from my work. These stories are part of our story as servers and hosts. It keeps the job lighthearted and more enjoyable. I love the people I work with, and not everyone can say that! I can’t wait for my next weird moment.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
