The mind of a writer? A beautiful disaster of personal philosophies and designs that rack across your brain until blissfully scattered across an empty screen. And that’s a true statement.
The mind of a writer is literally a tornado of words and ideas. Inspiration comes from the strangest of places, and as soon as it hits you, the world stops turning until you write it down. Writing allows you to express your inner storm that has been whirling around inside your head, and throw it across a piece of paper or a computer screen for the world to see, or maybe for your eyes only. Writing is a selfless act of art. Emotions of fiction, reality, truth, and deceptions literally take over your mind, body, and soul.
The mind of a writer is either full of ideas or completely and hopelessly barren. Writers block is a disease that comes at the most inopportune times. Writers with deadlines, like those for the Odyssey, have experienced both sides of this. One week I’ll have three different ideas and I’ll be writing for hours, other weeks I’ll be stuck within the walls of my skull digging for the slightest answer to a topic idea. In all honesty, it’s a blessing and a curse.
Why do we write? Some people feel forced to write. They feel that it’s not a choice out of pure passion, but that it’s a job. Others write because it’s their only outlet. If you have something torturing your conscience, writing it down can relieve that stress; it’s out in the world and it’s not bottled up anymore. Others write for the enjoyment of reaching out to other peoples’ emotions, whether it’s an informative article, a fiction novel, or a heartfelt poem. If you’re not inclined to speak what you feel, writing solves that problem. And for some, it’s an art form that touches the root of your emotions like no other.
The mind of a writer never stops thinking. It’s always trying to take a simple subject, and turn it into something bigger, something with more meaning. In some instances, we want to connect with people, makes a difference, bring out emotions and opinions. In other instances, we just want to calm the storm in our heads. When you think of an idea to write about, it's like an itch you can’t scratch. You can’t focus, you get antsy, and you have to write it down right then and there out of fear that it’ll somehow slip out of your mind in that instant.
I write to speak my mind. It’s almost as if half of my brain writes articles that express my opinions, and the other half pulls information from the deepest and darkest abyss of my mind and holds it within the lines of a piece of white notebook paper. There is writing that needs to be shown to the world and writing that can only be seen by one pair of eyes, which are your own.
Our minds are literal chaos. It’s like a trigger can go off at any second and we can’t help but feel the need to write about it. Writing is important. It comes in many different forms and everyone uses it in one way or another. The world would have nothing if it didn’t have the madness that makes up a writer.
