Writer and actress Issa Rae has become an instant hit with her breakout HBO show, Insecure. As the show's fans watched the much anticipated season two finale Sunday night, many were left hella confused and frustrated.
In the latest season, Issa is working through her breakup with Lawrence, Molly is trying to advance her career and Kelly is still her outspoken self. After Issa's disagreement with Daniel, many fans were left to question whether or not she was overreacting, and if the two would ever rekindle their relationship. Lawerence has a new woman in his life who is less than perfect for him, and Molly has been struggling to have her value be acknowledged by her colleagues as well as the men in her life. In the seventh episode, Issa finally snaps and begins throwing and breaking the things in her apartment, a side of her we have yet to see. This type of raw emotion was a pivotal moment in the season that laid the groundwork for the finale.
The last episode was written to show a 30 day timeframe from not only Issa's perspective, but also Molly's and Lawrence's. By showing each perspective, viewers had a better sense of how these characters have been living the events that have taken place, and have more insight on each person's side of the story. Viewers finally got to see how each of the main characters were reacting to one another's actions and, to be honest, it was pretty insightful.
For the entirety of the season, many fans have been on the fence about whether they are Team Daniel or Team Lawrence. Some argue that they would rather not like either of Issa's former boy toys, and other's blame Issa for her own misfortunes. Molly has also given viewers grief by giving in and starting her relationship with Dro, who is "happily" married to a mutual friend. Lastly, the one character almost everyone loves to hate is Tiffany. Tiffany acts as if she is the best of all the leading ladies because she is married and recently announced her pregnancy.
With all of the varying lifestyles and stages each character is in, the show gives viewers a diverse representation of what it is like to be a black man or woman in today's society. Issa Rae writes the show with an immense amount of realness and honesty. The characters each have their own problems, but aren't out of touch with real people. One reason this finale struck a chord with so many is because it was raw. Fans want Lawrence and Issa to be together because the idea of "the one that got away" is very real. They are frustrated with Molly because it seems ignorant for her to be in the type of relationship she is in but, on the other hand, some may feel a connection with her because it's relatable. Issa going back to Daniel after their falling out may anger some because it's unfair to him, while others may feel Daniel is the best option for her.
No matter how you reacted to the show's finale, one thing we as fans can all agree on is that the next season can't come soon enough. In season three I hope to see more character development for Daniel and the other smaller roles. Additionally, the idea of seeing Tiffany as a mother and Kelly "running" another marathon would make great episodes.
