On July 9th, 2018, Donald Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the title of the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Brett Kavanaugh has been a part of the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit for over 12 years, has been a professor at the College of Law for prestige schools such as Yale and Harvard, and coaches his daughter's basketball teams. On September 16th, 2018, a woman by the name of Christine Ford addressed a letter to Rep. Anna Eshoo and Sen. Dianne Feinstein regarding an accusation that would change the life of Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
The letter accused Kavanaugh of pinning Christine Ford down, groping her, and putting his hand over her mouth at a party in the 1980s, back when the two were in high school. In many news articles, Kavanaugh is being referred to as an "elite member" of his high school, as well as college. Another accusation that has come forward by Deborah Ramirez, a former classmate of Kavanaugh's at Yale, is accusing the Judge of exposing himself at a college party. Why would a man with such high qualifications, integrity, and strong devotion to the law be accused of such misconduct? While I believe that certain aspects of the Brett Kavanaugh accusations could be true, I still believe that he should be confirmed. His dedication to public service, family-man persona, and impartial arbiter record in terms of the law lead me to believe that he is fit for the job.
The #MeToo movement has made a large impact on our society. With the accusations made by Christine Ford and Deborah Ramirez, many more women have come forward with stories that have changed their lives and the lives of the accused. In fairness to both political parties being equal, it has been brought up recently that this movement may be trying to bringing up half the political construct while demolishing the other. It has been brought to the public eye due to the recent scandal regarding Brett Kavanaugh that this movement may be more in favor of political parties rather than sexual assault awareness as an issue within our country. Recently, the President has brought up how this movement may be shining light on one parties' accusations, rather than bringing light to all of the issues within our country. Sexual assault awareness should not be bound to a certain party, but rather the prevailing issue as a whole.
When looking at this issue in a humanistic approach, I think this leads us back to America's values, including the phrase "innocent until proven guilty." While these accusations may or may not be true, we must think of the way that a man who has not been proven guilty life has been turned upside down. Imagine being the wife or children of Brett Kavanaugh, and having to face these accusations head-on. Regardless of party, we must come together to rid the effects of issues based on political affiliation and hold on to the meaning of the phrase "innocent until proven guilty."
