You may remember hearing Ingrid Michaelson during an episode of Grey’s Anatomy or on an Old Navy commercial many years ago. We love her for her classics like “You and I,” “The Way I Am” and “Keep Breathing” and we jammed to “Girls Chase Boys” off her last album. She’s a feel-good artist and is always there to cheer you up or power you through a hard time.
A lot has happened since the time of Ingrid’s classics and now Ingrid’s back with new feelings and a new sound with her album It Doesn’t Have to Make Sense. After losing her mother to a battle with cancer and after going through a divorce, Ingrid uses her experiences to pour her heart out into all of her songs. Each of her albums has many feelings, but this one seems to have the most contrasting emotions and truly shows the strength of Ingrid through music and lyrics. It’s perfect and well balanced and there’s something for everyone to love on this album.
For those who love a good, “forget you” kind of breakup jam, “Hello No” is what you’re looking for. First released as a single, Ingrid gets up in your face with this upbeat song. It’s a confidence-boosting anthem to those who have been wronged and realized that they deserve much better. For even more fun, check out the music video Ingrid made for it. It was created completely on Snapchat, funky filters and all (she loves Snapchat and I highly recommend following her-@therealingrid).
On the other side of the spectrum, Ingrid’s new album has some heart-happy songs that are sure to make you smile and dance. “Still the One” and “Celebrate” will have you clapping and singing along with that special loved one or a group of friends. They are great songs to add to a “wake up” playlist, if you’ve got one.
Ingrid opens up about her relationship with her mother with “I Remember Her.” Every song that Ingrid has ever written shows her lyrical talents, but this one especially tells a beautiful story of someone that played a huge part in her life. You capture just part of their relationship, but can feel the love Ingrid has for her mother through her voice and her memories. She makes you realize how important the little moments are when it comes to those you love.
Ingrid’s classics may consist of few instruments, but she’s been developing a new style in her recent albums. “Light Me Up” starts off the album and shows off that new style. Many instruments and technical effects make this song stand out from the rest. This style and change gives Ingrid a different type of energy that affects listeners in a completely new way.
So when you go to return to your homework or when you need a new album to listen to during your next car ride, check out It Doesn’t Have to Make Sense and let Ingrid take it from there.
