Why You Should Be An Informed Voter This Election Day

Constantly choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil.

Why You Should Be An Informed Voter This Election Day

As November 8th quickly approaches (Yes, Donald, this is the day Americans will vote for our next president), it is becoming more and more apparent how citizens feel about our choices for Commander in Chief. If you scour the internet long enough you can find hundreds upon thousands of interviews, polls, and statistics about where our nation stands and the consensus seems to be choosing "the lesser of two evils" no matter your preference. To me, that is deeply disturbing. We are talking about a person who will lead our country for the next four years. A person who will likely appoint four supreme court justices setting the pace for our country for years to come. A person who will be trusted with military secrets and nuclear codes and we are choosing between "the lesser of two evils"?

In a recent poll conducted by Odyssey with The University of Massachusettes-Lowell , 53% of millennials polled would rather a meteor strike the Earth and extinguish all life than Donald Trump become president. On the other hand, the same poll found that although millennials favored Hilary Clinton to Donald Trump, 64% do not think she is honest. Isn't there something wrong with this picture? Clinton is favored over Trump when it comes to millennials, but over half of the participants polled believe she is dishonest.

We have someone who is on the verge of becoming our next president, but citizens openly acknowledge that she is not honest or trustworthy. How have we come to the two nominees for President of the United States when one makes citizens want to be blown off the face of the planet and the other, who is leading in the polls, but people don't believe a word that comes out of her mouth? I believe all of this boils down to people being completely uninformed about the candidates and being completely brainwashed by the mainstream media.

This video from Info Wars, among many others floating around the internet, is a good example of citizens being blatantly uninformed about the candidates and their policies. The question was simple; Who do you want to be President of the United States of America and why. One man states his love for Donald Trump because he was "going to be a good president and make American great again", but when asked how and why he thinks Donald Trump will be successful he is completely clueless. The same pattern was found among Hilary supporters. When a Hilary supporter was asked why she was giving Mrs. Clinton her vote she stated, "because she's a woman" and could not provide any other reason besides her gender.

How can you vote for someone solely because of their gender or because they "tell it like it is" but with no depth, rhyme, or reason to anything they say? The mainstream media can take a lot of the blame for this phenomenon because of their blatant biases and brainwashing of American citizens into not being able to think for themselves. Once our country stops letting the media control and persuade us on who to vote for and stops submitting to social media trends this pattern of having to choose the "lesser of two evils" will continue for years to come.

So, this election day, it is imperative to be informed about all the candidates before you cast your vote. Whether you vote, Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Green Party or Independent, vote for the candidate that reflects your personal values and beliefs not who the media, or anybody else, tells you to vote for. Do your own research and think for yourself. A good way to help you decide which candidate is right for you is to take this quiz to see where you stand on issues like foreign policy, education, and immigration among many others. At the end, you will be matched with the candidate that most closely reflects your personal values and beliefs. Millennials represent a large percentage of voters and have a real voice this election. Be informed, do your own research, and when you go to your local polling place you can feel confident that you are voting for someone who represents who you are and what you believe in. As Jerry Garcia said, "Constantly choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil". May the best candidate, hopefully, win.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
