Album: Infinity On High
Artist: Fall Out Boy
Record Label: Island Records
Following their debut “From Under The Cork Tree”, Chicago quartet, Fall Out Boy released “Infinity on High” on February 6th, 2007. The album was a commercial success, spending a week at number one on Billboard’s Rock Albums & was certified as Platinum by Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album itself brought about fan favorite songs like “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race”, “Thanks fr th Mmrs” & “I’m Like a Lawyer with the Way I’m Always Trying to Get You Off (Me & You)”. The best way to describe “Infinity on High” is “From Under The Cork Tree” but well done. The biggest improvement comes from frontman Patrick Stumps, whose voice is more smooth, and more importantly catchy. You can’t help but want to sing along with his voice (most notably in the song “Bang The Doldrums” whose chorus is simply “Yo-ho-ho Woah-oh”). The greatest strength of the album lies in their mix with other genres. The albums opener “Thriller” features Jay-Z, songs like “Thanks fr th Mmrs” being produced by pop-soul legend Babyface (Boyz II Men, Janet Jackson) and producer Butch Walker (Avril Lavigne) add to the improved instrumentation on the album. Lyrically, bassist Pete Wentz remains as sharp as ever though it seems he’s trying to hard to create witty content. Overall, “Infinity On High” showcased Fall Out Boy’s ability to create a top notch album (and probably foreshadowed their “sell-out” into pop).
