Infidelity

A nursery rhyme to demonstrate the negative implications of jealousy, insecurity, curiosity, and infidelity

Jealousy, overwhelmingly, increases insecurity

& curiosity, if you ask me, breeds infidelity.

So, jealousy and curiosity could destroy a family

If infidelity, eventually, or potentially, comes to be.

Emotionally, physically, cheating has a few degrees

But simply, curiosity, kills not the cat, instead the peace.

The inspiration for this poem came from the way the words jealousy, insecurity, curiosity, and infidelity sounded together. Despite their negative denotations, they have an almost sing-song quality and from this sprung the idea to write a sort of nursery rhyme about infidelity and its consequences. I wanted each line to have a similar rhythm much like a traditional nursery rhyme. I also used the "ee" sound throughout the entire poem, with each line rhyming with the other, to make it sound even more sing-songy. The message of the poem is not incredibly complicated, much like any nursery rhyme. With this poem, I am essentially saying that although curiosity in and of itself is an innocent emotion, it could lead to cheating and all of the negatives associated with it. Furthermore, jealousy which often goes hand in hand with insecurity, can further exacerbate the situation. I enjoy combining styles and themes in different and not necessarily traditional ways. For instance, writing a sonnet about getting drunk or, as we see above, a nursery rhyme warning against infidelity and how easily it can stem from mere curiosity. Additionally, the format of a nursery rhyme provides the additional layer to the poem that not cheating on one's significant other is (or at least should not be) a difficult concept to understand. It is so easy, even a child could understand it provided my handy-dandy nursery rhyme. It is not exactly hard to not be a bad person, but sometimes people may need a little bit of assistance.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
