The holidays are a time for family, friends, and even that special someone. It is also the season to buy an abundance of gifts. Many people, like myself, struggle to find the perfect gift for every important person in our lives. We check countless stores, methodically compare price tags, and with little hope find a gift worth giving.
While the typical gift can be placed in a decorative bag, or wrapped in a bright red bow, there are several gifts that you don't have to buy in order to show someone that you love them. Don't get me wrong; Material items can be aesthetically pleasing, and even useful to your every day life. Everyone loves to feel a little spoiled, even if they're not willing to admit it.
America is home to consumers, and while material gifts are the ideal gift for many, these are not the only types of gifts we can give. Whether it's because of financial restrictions, or the lack of desire to fall into said consumerism, you don't have to buy products in order to impress those around you!
1. Do you have any artistic flair (even a little)?
Don't be afraid to get creative for people you care about! Writing a poem, composing a song, and drawing or painting a picture for a loved one are ways to exercise creative freedom while producing heartfelt gifts. While these gifts can take some time to produce, the amount of effort put into them is sure to leave your loved ones with a smile on their face.
2. Do your loved ones listen to music (or do they live under a rock)?
In an ideal world, you'd want to gift all of the people you care about with tickets to their favorite musical performer. A more realistic (and cost-friendly) gift would be creating mixtapes for the people in your life. Gifting a loved one with a mixtape or CD gives you creative freedom to pick songs you know they'll enjoy.
3. Do you have items you've never used of appreciated?
We all have that one book, sweater, or DVD that we have never used. It sits in the back of our closet, taunting us. Perhaps a gift or item you didn't enjoy or appreciate may be exactly what someone else would love. As long as it's in good condition, it's worth a try.
While I'm sure there are infinite amounts of gifts you can give a family member or friend for the holidays, remember that not every gift has to be pricey or "perfect." The holidays are less about gifts and more about who you spend them with.
