Many plants are good at taking harmful toxins out of the air and providing oxygen. Indoor air quality is one of the top five risks to public health according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Opt for a natural purifier with these plants instead of an expensive and large store-bought air purifier. The plants will not only look pretty, but they will keep you healthy too.

Three big chemicals that are very bad for us to be exposed to are formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene. All of these chemicals can cause cancer. They can also cause respiratory problems, or make existing respiratory problems worse. Formaldehyde is a chemical that is used in many building materials and household products.

Things such as plywood, glues and some insulation products contain formaldehyde. Benzene is a fast-evaporating, flammable liquid that is widely used to make other chemicals. Plastics, rubbers and drugs are some of these chemicals. People can breathe benzene in, or it can be absorbed through the skin. Trichloroethylene is used as a solvent and is an ingredient for adhesives and paint removers. All of these toxins are very dangers in large amounts, so having plants that dispose of them is a very positive thing.

1. Aloe Vera

Aloe absorbs formaldehyde and benzene, which can come from paints and chemical house cleaners. Not only will it help clean your air, but you can use it you have a cut or sunburn. It is a succulent so it is able to grow with little water, making it extremely easy to care for.

2. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

This plant with a cute name removes formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene. The fact that it removes all three is very impressive. They are easy to care for and will let you know when they need water by drooping. They typically only need to be watered once a week and need little sunlight to thrive.

3. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

This is another resilient plant. It goes by many names such as airplane plant, St. Bernard's lily, spider ivy, Hen and Chicken or ribbon plant. It fights benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene. It prefers dry soil. You can even regrow the plant by taking off a leaf or "spider" and potting it.

4. Mint (Mentha)

These plants are great for keeping mosquitos, ants and flies away. They also give off a great smell. These plants need at least 4 hours of sunlight a day and moist soil. They purify the air and are helpful for people with lung diseases. Mint also stimulates your brain so its great to put in an office or wherever you do work!

5. Baby Rubber Plant (Peperomia Obstusifolia)

Perfect for those who don’t necessarily have a green thumb. These plants only need occasional watering. For their size, they emit a lot of oxygen and also remove toxins from the house.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?
