The 4th of July, Independence Day, America Day, 'Murica Day, Red, White & Blue day—whatever you want to call the day, is a day that all Americans are familiar with.
This holiday is the one day a year that it is socially acceptable to wear head-to-toe red white and blue, various American flag trinkets, and scream "USA" all at the same time with little judgement. Though it typically serves as a day filled with fun activities, family, friends, and maybe even travel, it can go wrong very easily.
Sometimes the celebration can go a little too far resulting in injuries, trouble with the law, or worse. Here are some reminders to ensure that you, and everyone else, remains unscathed and has an enjoyable holiday.
1. Dogs are afraid of loud noises—like fireworks exploding in the sky.
More pets go missing on July 4 than any other day of the year. The loud, unrecognizable noises created by fireworks trigger anxiety within dogs. I mean - wouldn't you be scared if you heard explosions happening in the sky and you had no idea what it was? Please put your little furry friends in the house when the firework show begins.
2. Buy fireworks from a trustworthy vendor.
The safety hazard that comes with fireworks is already fairly high. Combine that with a supply of faulty or sketchy fireworks and you've got an accident waiting to happen. The best way to determine a trustworthy vendor is by seeing which fireworks are legal and which are not. Also, use your better judgement.
3. Swim safely
If you have plans to do water sports, swim, or boat (and a lot of people do), be very cautious. Water injuries are a very serious manner and can be just as dangerous as any other activities. Don't swim alone. Make sure to wear a life jacket. Keep an eye on the kids. Be especially weary of other boaters on the water.
4. Stay hydrated
First of all, I am talking about water here too. Depending on your geographical location, July can be a viciously hot month. Remember amidst the fun in the sun that you need water to survive and without it you can be dehydrated or even pass out. So, drink water.
5. Practice safe grilling methods
Always, always, always grill outside. Also be sure to keep small children away from the grilling area.
6. You can prevent wildfires
Make sure you are grilling and lighting fireworks an appropriate distance from the wood line. The smallest spark can cause a huge fire. A misplaced firework can cause a LOT of damage.
7. Lighting fireworks + caution = good
It's really easy to get carried away when it comes time to light the fireworks. One wrong move can result in a lot of agony so make sure its done right. Be sure that everyone is out of the way of the firework's path, small children are not close to the lighting of the fireworks, and there is a bucket of water close by in case of emergency.
8. Alcohol and fireworks do not mix well.
Drinking and doing anything can be dangerous. So naturally, lighting fireworks is most definitely one of those things. Remember that alcohol impairs judgment drastically and if you, or anyone, has had too much to drink they should not have any part in handling the fireworks.
9. There will be a lot of people on the road. Drive with caution.
July 4 is one of those holidays that often constitutes (hah, pun intended) dense traffic conditions. Everyone is excited to get where they're going, but remember to follow the rules of the road. Everyone has a place to be. Be mindful.
10. Do not drink and drive.
Do I even have to explain this one? I'm going to sneak in another reminder—just because.
11. Remember that everyone deserves freedom and safety.
Remember that every individual in this country should be endowed with certain liberties that ensure their freedom and safety. Remember that these liberties should be granted to ALL individuals that inhabit this country. Remember that everyone, in all 50 states, deserves the same equal rights to live, love, and pursue their happiness.
