Earning the honor to compete in the Olympic Games is extremely prestigious and quite a remarkable feat in itself. There are so many athletes representing their country of origin that have put in countless hours of intense training and dedication to earn their spot in the infamous international competition. Nonetheless, I have to say that I am biased towards the USA (Hey, that rhymed!). If I were to recount every amazing performance in this article, I would be here all night recounting every performance because, let's be real here, all of them are really pretty epic. So, without further ado, here are some of the medal qualifying, jaw-dropping contributions from team USA.
1. Red Gerard
Becoming the youngest American man to win an Olympic gold medal since 1928, Gerard stunned with his performance in the men's Slopestyle snowboarding, earning the USA it's first gold medal in PyeongChang.
The 17-year-old was almost as shocked as everyone else, attributing his carefree attitude towards competing to his win. According to reports, he's really just looking forward to eating some burritos and "hanging out". Same Red, same.
2. Chloe Kim
At just 17 years old, Kim became the Olympic gold medalist in the women's halfpipe competition with nearly a perfect score of 98.25 in her third and final run.
The most impressive component of her run was her signature back-to-back 1080s, something no other woman has ever successfully accomplished in competition. This trick entails three 360 degree turns during one singular jump. Yeah, catch me sliding down the mountain on my A double S after attempting that.
3. Mikaela Shiffrin
The Giant Slalom. The name of the event in itself is intimidating. Imagine adding icy and windy conditions to the course on competition day. OMG. Mikaela Shiffrin secured gold in her impressive run on the Giant Slalom during her first Olympic Games ever. You go girl.
4. Nick Goepper
Medalling when you're from a state that is relatively lacking in training terrain is pretty impressive. Originally from Indiana, Goepper obtained a silver medal after pulling off a triple cork 1440 (even the name is cool). I have to say that the trick was really impressive, and the judges must've thought so too because it moved him up from ninth place to second place. What a comeback.
5. Jamie Anderson
I was biting my nails watching the entire women's Slopestyle event. I felt the heartbreak as the weather conditions led many of the athletes to fall short of expectations and literally fall on the course due to the wind. Jamie Anderson's improvised run was incredible in itself, regardless of the conditions and her medal was well-deserved.
6. John-Henry Kruger
When I think of speed skating, my mind immediately goes to Apolo Ohno. Well, the 2018 Winter Olympics introduced a new America Speed skater who finessed a silver in the men's 1000m short track speed skate with three competitors falling right behind him. Talk about a close call. This was America's first medal since Apolo Ohno's silver in 2010.
7. Maia & Alex Shibutani
Forget about sibling rivalry, this brother-sister duo secured bronze for Team USA after placing second in the free-dance portion of the competition. Now if only I could get my brother to text me back.
8. Shaun White
Four letters, one word - GOAT. Shaun White's third run was practically inhuman and flawlessly executed to earn him his third gold medal in his fourth Winter Olympic Games. You don't really have to know what a 1440 is to know that Shaun White is definitely gold medalist material.
With so many more events to come, I can't wait to see what the rest of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games has in store for the USA. All I know is that all of the athletes competing, no matter what the final results were, did freaking amazing. I can't imagine being in their shoes, watching them compete is stressful enough!
