A New Beginning

A reflection on my current situation and a hope for what will be eventually

A New Beginning
Naomi Burhoe

It’s another new year and I begin once again with a reflection of past escapades and thoughts about what the future could hold.

The new year itself I celebrated surrounded by awesome friends and a welcoming crowd of people from other cultures. Salsa dancing and the love of simply letting go were high on the list of priorities as we lifted our hands and voices up in jubilation.

Now as I write this upon the first of the year (though I know y’alls are reading it later than that), I reflect on the subject of my consistent single status and what it could mean to start a relationship in the coming year.

Sadly, I have few prospects on this front, though I am attempting to branch out in hopes that maybe something could turn up.

And yet, in a way, I’d like to embrace this season in my life. It is a season of trying new things, chasing after new experiences, and dwelling on new lines of thinking. I am not tied down with the responsibilities which oftentimes accompany the onset romantic relationships, and I am able to study new horizons without worrying about how my partner would view them.

I can abandon myself to accomplishing the tasks at hand, whether they are serving customers at my place of employment, taking difficult classes in college in order to broaden my understanding of the world, or going on spontaneous trips to cities three hours away in order to visit friends who attend a different school.

Though I might have to conserve on finances due to the costs of maintaining an automobile or paying for school expenses not covered in tuition, I still can find time to do things I love with the people I love, without having the added expenditures which come with pursuing a long-term relationship with a gentleman.

That is not to say that I would not like to start a relationship, but it is a reflection on how things currently stand between me and potential partners-in-crime.

All this being said, I do have a few New Year’s resolutions to propose for myself and my well-being (and the well-being of others).

  • I resolve to finds ways to be kind to other people every day (in patience, in generosity, in gentleness, in comfort, etc.).
  • I resolve to continue pursuing a better lifestyle (increasing physical activity, eating healthier, etc.).
  • I resolve to embrace the singleness which I have lived in my whole life (it is a blessing, and if it changes, that would be a blessing too. But if not, I want to live contentedly in every state which life chooses to place me).

Thank you for your time, and I pray that someone may bless you in an amazing way today and/or in the coming days. Good luck to you now. Naomi signing out.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Syllabus Week As Told By Kourtney Kardashian

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
