So as I am on Facebook the other day I scrolled past an article labeled Why Girls Should Stop Wearing High-Waisted Bikinis. I thought it was a mistake, or that I read the title wrong. But I read it correctly. Total Frat Move is a site similar to Odyssey where writers can post opinions of their choice, and in this case, Fraternity boys write the pieces. This is in no way to say that all fraternity boys are insensitive and think women are around just to please them like this one writer did; this is to talk about this article and how it is disgusting and revolting to know that there are boys (they don’t deserve to be called men) who think this way.
First of all, the article starts off with the writer saying he is in “no way, shape, or form” qualified to tell a fashion designer how to make clothes or tell his girlfriend what she should be wearing. Which is true. I’m glad he is smart enough to at least acknowledge that. He compares the high-waisted look to Crocs saying that they are both ugly and just because one person is wearing it doesn’t mean it should become a common trend. I would understand his thought process if that was all he was saying. If he said he didn’t like the look because it was ugly or whatever that would be fine because that is a normal opinion; it is the idiotic reasons he gave for why he isn’t a fan of this clothing trend that I have a HUGE PROBLEM with.
Reason #1- They Look Like Something Our Moms Would Wear
Okay fine, some people think high-waisted shorts or bathing suits look like “mom clothing.” I personally love them but that is beside the point. Anyway, he does not just say the high-waisted bathing suit looks like something his mom would wear and end it there. He says that when he is expecting to see a girl in “glorified underwear” that she should be in a bikini that reveals more skin. This writer also says that he doesn’t want to mix imagery of us girls in bathing suits and his mom when “adding pics to a potential image bank to use for later.” MY BODY IS NOT FOR YOU! My body is mine, and I control what I want to wear, not you. End of story. I don’t care if you think I look like your mom. I am comfortable, I am happy, I am me. Who are you to tell me I should not wear something because then you won’t get the right pleasure from it? Boy, bye.
Reason #2- Normal Girls Don’t Look Good In Them
Plain and simple, he says Taylor Swift and Gigi Hadid have the bodies, and we normal women with “normal” bodies (whatever those are) can’t pull off this type of bathing suit. “These girls have the body to pull it off. You do not. Snap me photo proof if you think you can.” We women are beautiful in all of our unique shapes and sizes, and no one has any right to say that we can’t pull off a bathing suit because we aren’t a supermodel. This boy is correct, I am not willing to give up my late night pizza for a body to please his male mind. I can eat whatever I want, whenever I want, and then wear whatever clothing I please. I will not be controlled. I look good in whatever I want to look good in.
Reason #3- Your A*s Disappears In These Things
He says the designer of high-waisted bathing suits had one thing in mind, to get rid of girls’ butts, and he is not okay with that. Yes, a lot of girls do spend hours at the gym perfecting our butts, but guess what? Once again, it is not for you. If a girl is at the gym, it is because SHE wants to be there and wants to make HERSELF happy with what she looks like. No, we don’t wear yoga pants and low-cut tops for looks. YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO MY BODY BECAUSE YOU ARE A MAN. My bathing suit, not yours. My butt, not yours. My body, not yours!
It is 2016, ladies and gentlemen. It is time to start realizing there are people in this world who still don’t understand that woman have a place in this world, and our place is not to please them. Whether you like a style of clothing or not, is one thing. To hate the clothing because it doesn’t please you in the way you were expecting is totally different. Ladies, it is our job to let these boys know that it is our bodies and these bodies are not to be messed with. We are strong, and we are beautiful, and they have no place to tell us otherwise.
