In Defense of Being a Shopaholic

I could give up shopping, but I'm not a quitter

In Defense of Being a Shopaholic

Earlier this week, someone I just met asked me what I liked to do for fun, and the first thing out of my mouth was "shopping." To anyone that knows me, this comes as no surprise, especially upon seeing my closet. People question why I shop so much, listing reasons such as money and closet space as to why I shouldn't shop so much. But, I've come up with a few reasons as to why being a self-proclaimed shopaholic isn't so bad.

You always have lots of outfit combinations.

The more you shop, the more clothes you have, and, therefore, the more possible outfits you can create. I don't know about the rest of y'all, but ever since seeing the Lizzie McGuire Movie where Kate yelled "LIZZIE MCGUIRE YOU'RE AN OUTFIT REPEATER," I have been terrified of repeating outfits too often (am I the only one with that fear?). Of course, I have some standby outfits that never fail me, but it's always fun to get a new top that goes with my favorite jeans to make a new outfit. Plus, variety is the spice of life: you could wear the same striped shirt a lot, or you can have 3 or 4 (or 10 if you're me...) striped shirts to mix things up.

You're the friend who always has something to wear.

Whether it's an LBD for your friend going to a formal last minute or a business casual blouse for your roommate's first interview, you've got it all covered. Your friends always come to you first when they need something to wear. I love that I can help people out by having an overflowing full closet with clothes for just about any occasion. When we're friends, my closet is your closet (just give my clothes back).

Retail therapy is a real thing.

Yes, I know that money can't buy happiness, but trying on (and then buying) cute clothes is so much fun. Scouring racks for something to go with those new shorts or just trying on a formal dress for fun is a great way to distract myself when I'm stressed. Plus the potential of adding even more clothes is exciting, at least for me it is. And if I'm too stressed to go out, there is always online shopping.

You're on top of the latest trends (and sales).

Since I shop so often, I can see what's on trend for the coming season; plus, I always score great finds on the sales racks. So being in stores so often is a win-win for me: new trendy clothes for the coming season and cute, cheap clothes to wear now.

So to all of those that question my love of shopping, those are a few reasons as to why shopping is great. And, of course, this quote speaks to me on a spiritual level:

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
