This was an interesting movie to say the least. Marked as being a dramatic comedy, In A Relationship consists of Emma Roberts playing the borderline stereotypical crazy girlfriend Hallie, who just wants to move in with her boyfriend of 5 years, Owen, which winds up ending their relationship.
The use of the term comedy in my opinion is not accurate. In all honesty this movie reads as more of a Wattpad story than anything else. Hallie is portrayed as extremely possessive, constantly fighting, and incessantly self centered. Owen frankly is no better. Owen is outrageously jealous and treats Hallie like she means nothing to him. The arguments this couple has are petty and immature, it's hard to believe they lasted as long as they did.
This story lacked any redeeming traits. All the characters were unoriginal, annoying, and uninteresting. The two main characters were terrible together and together apart. Secondary characters Willa and Matt were not any better. Willa was a girl that was too hot to settle down with one person and Matt was the nice guy the audience was supposed to feel bad for. However, Willa and Matt's relationship came off as cliche and disappointing. Ignoring the characters, you would think maybe the plot would have something compelling about it. This again was unfortunately untrue. I don't even remember there being any structure to what was going on, in fact I think that was probably done purposely. The only option I can imagine is that the writers thought that the characters were going to be so relatable just going about their lives that they didn't need to have any real story happening.
Sitting here now, all I can remember is how much I hated every single person in the movie. If that is the only take away, then a movie was clearly not good. I would give In A Relationship a 1 out of 5 stars.
