Coming to college after spending 18 years at home is definitely challenging. We no longer have our moms to take care of us nor our dads to buy us everything. We are forced to be independent, but honestly, that's easier said than done.
Here's some things we forget to do that we should really start remembering to do:
Not Changing the Lint in The Dryer
Having lint in the dryer is the easiest way to catch your house/apartment/dorm on fire. It takes less than 30 seconds to change the lint and it can save a lot of money and distress if something were to go wrong. It's so easy to forget to do, especially if you're anything like me and never did laundry before leaving for college.
Leaving Windows Open at Night
Unfortunately most college campuses aren't the safest places. And equally as unfortunate, many college housing options do not have air conditioning. It makes total sense to keep windows open, but during the night it is important to shut your windows, especially if you live on the ground floor.
Turning in Rent Checks/Utility Checks Late
The first of the month rolls around every month. At the same time. But it can be hard to remember that you have grown up things, like bills, to take care of. Not paying your bills on time can really damage your credit, and that will stick with you forever. Get a calendar and make plans with your roommates to pay the bills on time.
Leaving Valuables in Your Car
Coming from a very safe hometown, I often forget that Columbus is considered a dangerous city. Leaving valuables in plain sight in the car is a sure fire way to get your windows smashed and car broken into. I never had to think about the safety of my car at home, but on campus it is a totally different story.
Zipping Your Purse at a Bar
Ladies, we can't forget to close our purses while at bars. With how packed bars get, it can be easy for shady guys to steal stuff right out of our purses. This can be easily avoided if you just zip your purse.
Checking Expirations Dates
Mom isn't at college to tell you not to eat that bread that is growing strange green spots. Especially when the late night munchies hit, you might forget to check to make sure that the food you're about to devour isn't past its prime.
Getting in a Taxi Alone
This is more for the ladies, but getting in a taxi alone can be very dangerous. You never know who your taxi driver is. He might decide to go down a back alley and who knows what might happen from there. Play it safe and force a friend to go with you.
Staying safe in college really isn't that difficult. Just use your head and always ask yourself: What would Mom do?
