Animals make the world go ‘round. Our pets become our family. (If you disagree, you’re wrong.) If you’re anything like me, you prefer your pets over people, and would break your plans with friends just to hang out at home with your dog or cat. It’s a special relationship that we develop with our furry friends, and that’s why it’s so important to keep these things in mind when adding a new addition to your family.

Adopt, don’t shop. Instead of buying the $5000 purebred Siberian husky, opt for the sweet husky brought into your local animal shelter. Not only will you be saving copious amounts of money, but you will also potentially be saving the life of this creature. Choosing the latter option gives a cat or dog in need a loving home, and makes their entire existence so much better. To you, they may just be another animal, but to them you are everything. You are the provider, the protector, and the nurturer. They will be so thankful to be a part of your family.

When shelters become overcrowded or adoption numbers begin to dwindle, these establishments will often waive their adoption fees or cut down on their already low prices. These animals come equipped with all of their shots and most of the time are spayed and neutered. Because of this, you can rest assured that they are and can continue to be happy and healthy. In the off-chance that your animal does have prior medical or health related issues, they must disclose this information to you before you sign the adoption papers. They must also tell you if there have been any recent outbreaks of disease or illness at their shelter.

Adults are often the very last to be picked. Many of them end up in various foster families and never find forever homes. More often than not, people often search for puppies or kittens and never take a second look at the adults. If you’re interested in adding a puppy to your family, consider this: An adult dog is probably already housebroken. You won’t have to worry about the countless trips outside to use the bathroom or cleaning up accidents from your carpet. Puppies often chew anything and everything as they teethe. Most adults grow out of this habit and opt for a chew toy instead. If you have kids, puppies can be rough. They jump, scratch, and bite when they play. A mature adult will be a much more suitable choice for homes with children. Don’t just walk by the adult dog or cat without a second glance, measure all of your options before making your final choice.

If you are considering adding a furry friend to your home, remember this: adopt, don’t shop. Save your money and give an animal in need a loving home. Also, don’t forget that animals of all sizes and ages are still cute and playful. Maybe an adult is a better choice for you than a baby who has so much left to learn. However, whatever choices you decide to make, be assured that you are giving a deserving creature a second chance. Because you chose to add to your household, you’ve not only added a new family member into your life, but you’ve also shown this animal that there is love in the world; something they may have never known before.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
