Life loves to crash down our doors at unpredictable moments. It’s like a giant thunderstorm that is unpredictable and fiercely damaging. When we’re so easily distracted by little problems that come up in our life, we forget to be thankful. We all have individual lives and stories. b But what makes us truly happy is recognizing what we have and being thankful. We never know what life will throw at us, but when we have so much to be thankful for, it’s time we stopped and appreciated every moment.

When I look back at the experiences I’ve had in my life I’m very thankful. Without these experiences, I wouldn’t be who I am today. It took me a while to realize all that I should be thankful for. I found myself getting caught up in meaningless tasks and not appreciating what was right in front of me. It might sound selfish to say, but when life is whizzing by, it’s hard to notice the beauty. I find so many aspects of my life to be wonderful—and I’ve never been happier.

My friends and family support me and encourage me to love the life I’m living. Without them, I don’t know how I would have made it to the point of true happiness that I’m at today. I guess this is all a big part of growing up. And hey, adulting isn’t so bad. I love when I think about my life. I’m grateful that I’ve grown into an adult that is self-aware and determined. I have so many amazing friends and anytime I see a Facebook or Instagram post with them doing something incredible, my heart sings.

We have all come so very far from childhood. It might seem like our lives are a complete mess at times—but that’s what life is all about. Life would be plain without a challenge, and we would all go mad with boredom if it was too easy. But being thankful is about knowing what makes you a stronger human being and accepting the challenge.

I know that there are times when we all forget the importance of being thankful. I enjoy the moments when I can take a step back to appreciate what I have and what’s to come. Life is to be celebrated and lived. No matter how cheesy it may sound, if you look back on life and can’t remember one time where you felt complete, beautiful, and strong, then you’re doing it wrong.

Life is not mean to be a burden. When we’re too caught up in our little social media worlds, we forget what’s truly important. We’re all guilty of it, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take the time to realize the changes we need to make. When life happens around us, being thankful is one of the most rewarding things we can do. Without appreciation for what we have, we can never achieve true happiness. Our appreciation for the things and people we have in our life is necessary for our souls. I have a newfound appreciation for everyone that has helped me get where I am today. I would never be as happy as I am without them.

My advice: be thankful for what you have. You never know when life will strike next. As unpredictable as a thunderstorm and as fast as a tornado, life will pass us all by. I know I’ll always be thankful for what I have to keep me happy.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
