I recently came across this thread on twitter that talked about the importance of self-talk. I almost skipped over it because almost every thread on twitter leads to some negative and useless information. However, I read it because I was unfamiliar with the term, but after reading on, I realized just how important it really is. For those of you who don't know, self-talk is the little voice in your head, it can either lead to self sabotage, or it can lift you up.
After reading this thread, I took into consideration just how important it is to maintain a positive self-talk. This is the voice you hear first thing in the morning, the voice you hear all day, and the voice you hear at the end of the day. You can't escape it, so why not make the best of it?
This week I put the theory into practice. I woke up, practiced positive self-talk, and went about my day as usual. Surprisingly, this made a significant difference in the outcome of my day. I was no longer dreading getting out of bed, worried about how I'd make it through the day, or thinking about running back to my bed to sleep.
Some of my positive self-talk consisted of "today is going to be a good day", "some things may not go your way, and that's okay", "focus on the present and take it minute-by-minute", "it's okay to make a mistake, don't let it hold you back". These simple sayings make a huge difference.
I'm the type of person to be a negative Nelly. I have one thing go wrong and I instantly switch my mindset to negativity for the rest of the day. I never realized how unhealthy this was for my mental health. I was physically draining myself and sleeping my life away. I was digging myself further and further into a black hole.
Everyone's self-talk will be different as each individual is experiencing different situations in life. By practicing positive self-talk, you can effectively discover yourself, reach your limits, and break the barriers that are holding you back. You can't expect to grow and glow if you don't put in the effort to change.
