The Importance Of Being Open-Minded

There are seven billion people in the world experiencing things through different perspectives and with different opinions. In our ever-changing world, situations and challenges arise every day. However, especially in the year 2015, progress is also being made. But I believe such progress would not be achieved without open-minded people.

Take the legalization of gay marriage, for example. Even if you don’t agree with gay marriage, you cannot deny that it is progress nonetheless. I believe every human should have the right to marry, and it is not your place to judge anyone, especially if their actions have nothing to do with you. This is why it is important to be an open-minded person. You may not agree, but by being open-minded, you are allowing progress to take place.

Being open-minded is also about understanding the fact that your own ideas and beliefs may not be held by everyone else. Chances are you have found yourself in a situation where your beliefs conflict with someone else’s. In this case, an open-minded person would listen, reflect, and may choose to calmly respond. As a compassionate and competent person, you should be able to listen to other people’s beliefs, even if you don’t completely agree. By being closed-minded, we can hinder much needed growth from taking place.

Remember that you don’t always have to be right—it's it's hard, I know—but it is more important that you try to understand where people are coming from and what makes people think the way they do. If you do this, you can strengthen your own ideas and beliefs. It is also beneficial to see things from different perspectives. In this attempt, we can take several ideas or opinions into account.

On the other hand, I see close-mindedness—AKA stubbornness—as a sort of debilitating tumor in the minds of so many people. If you are set in your own beliefs but don’t even bother to listen to the beliefs of others, you cannot expect other to listen to you. Thus deterring progress or development of any kind. I won’t deny that it can be difficult being open-minded—especially when you find another person’s ideas or beliefs to be absurd. But if we at least try, it is better that remaining stagnant in our quest towards growth.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
