The Importance Of Having Your Own Style: Part 1

If you walk through a busy high school or college campus, or your local area mall, you may notice some repetitive fashion trends that seem to be “in style” at the moment. But if you look really hard, you might also notice some people who have a different way of taking the same fashion trend as everyone else and changing it to fit what they like, whether it be with the addition of a hat or a watch. This is evidence of someone having their own fashion style, and it is important in separating oneself from everyone else. This isn’t for the purpose of looking completely different or even wearing different clothing, but to add to what others are doing, and making it fit you and how you like to present yourself. Not everyone has their own personal fashion style, and that is perfectly acceptable. But those who take pride in setting their own fashion trends, this speaks to the importance of being different with your look.

Something so small as a watch can take your traditional style to a completely new level. It doesn’t matter if it’s digital or analog, a watch is an accessory that diverts the eyes away from other basic elements of your outfit. If you can afford it, having the same style watch in the different colors of what you wear maximizes your use and style. Having a watch for different occasions, such as a sports watch for the gym, and a nice silicon or metal watch for more casual and formal occasions, can also set your look apart and help people notice your particular style. Multiple watches makes for different variations with your outfit and you can never change up your look too much, as long as you still remain yourself.

For women, your handbag can be your best friend when you are trying to connect your outfit together. Sometimes it’s nice to match your bag to your outfit or to go with a more traditional beige or dark colored purse. It all depends on what you wear, and how comfortable you feel being different. Not every woman has the need to be different, but it never hurts to change up your bag because even when you don’t think men notice, we sometimes do, especially if you're changing it up. That’s not to say go out and grab all the expensive purses you can find because it doesn’t matter if it’s Michael Kors or Great Value, it all depends on how you work it into your look. Any woman can take a three dollar tote and make it look like a million dollar bag if you feel confident and stylish. So change it up using totes, shoulder bags, and purses to add to your already beautiful look for the day.

Most prized to my heart is the element of wearing a hat. I’m a firm believer that you can never own too many hats or styles of hats if you’re comfortable switching it up. A hat has the same effect as a watch does. It takes attention away from your otherwise regular outfit by adding a touch of style. A hat can speak to who you are as a person, from what sports team you may like to how formal you like to carry yourself. For men, some looks are nice with a forward hat and some work with a backward hat. It may come down to the style of hat, whether it be snap back or baseball cap. For women, it could take something as little as a beanie to change an entire look. There’s nothing like a hat to show your true style and set yourself apart from everyone else. It’s important to be different and have a different sense of fashion, if for no other reason than to be comfortable with just being yourself.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
