The Importance Of National Parks As Told By 'Survivor'

Among the government organizations affected by the Trump administration's freeze on government hiring, none has received such widespread attention as the National Park Service. A beloved organization by kids and adults alike, speculation has arisen over the hinderance of hiring summer workers for the national parks, though an exemption has now been made for these parks, according to CNN. Many, of course, were originally upset, and even frightened, at the possibility of the parks' closing for the summer. The following are only a few of the many reasons for the upset, as well as a look into why the National Park Service is just so darn awesome (as told by Survivor...because Survivor is also pretty darn awesome):

1. You can choose from a list of fifty-eight national parks to visit all across the nation.

2. The National Park Service isn't just about the parks.

The Service encompasses a total of 417 areas nationwide, including monuments, battlefields, military parks, historical parks, historic sites, lake shores, seashores, recreation areas, rivers and trails, the White House, and, of course, the national parks.

3. The National Park Service employs a total of approximately 22,000 people each year.

4. The Service also takes in approximately 400,000 volunteers each year.

5. The Service welcomes more than 275 million visitors each year.

6. They serve to revitalize communities.

7. The Service's parks are good at encompassing both the areas' scientific monuments AND local heritage and history into one awesome field trip.

They serve to preserve and celebrate local history and heritage, as well as natural resources.

8. Stressed over work or an upcoming exam?

There's something unusually calming about a random tree, a random river, or maybe even just a snail crawling across your foot.

9. Somehow inadvertently bored?

Go find a trail...or a cave...or a geyser.

10. Sick of being around other people?

Trust me, there is a significant lack of humans out in the woods.

11. Want to get active?

Okay, well those who do have so many options out in the great wilderness, from kayaking to hiking to canoeing to rock climbing to repelling...and so on. The fun makes you forget that you are, in fact, exercising!

12. The Service aids the survival of a whole bunch of species, like cute little sea turtles, or pretty little river mussels.

13. The Service works to preserve nature, not only in the park but in the surrounding areas.

That tree in your yard? Thank your local park ranger it hasn't been consumed by a swarm of weird tree-eating migratory insects.

14. The national parks are an easy way for a first-hand look at some of the beautiful animals out there in the wild: deer, moose, bears, and the like.

15. Hiking is a good excuse to wear those cute-but-kinda-muddy hiking boots you never get to wear.

16. There's honestly nothing like a good campfire s'more.

As you may or may not have guessed by now, the National Park Service is an organization that is near and dear to my heart. Not only do I believe that they host some of the greatest and most genuine people that this country has to offer, but their people are truly passionate about what they do to make this nation a better place. Visit a park, enjoy nature, and find appreciation not only in the world around you but also the people that make it even better.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

2013
Happy Birthday Cake

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
